Morgan’s Soccer Teams Earn Top Seeds for Shoreline Tourney; Football Wins Big Versus Lewis Mills

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer team finished its regular season by earning a 5-0 victory at Old Saybrook on Oct. 23. The Huskies posted a regular-season record of 12-2-2 and earned the top seed in this week’s Shoreline Conference Tournament.

Junior Zach Tuccitto scored a pair of goals to lead Morgan’s attack in the win against Old Saybrook. Junior Nick Rubino made five saves in the net for the Huskies, who outshot Old Saybrook 17-7. The Huskies scored quickly in the first half, when Tuccitto put a ball in the net off an assist from senior David Saturno in the 5th minute for a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until sophomore Sean Cafferty scored in the 47th minute off an assist from senior Nick Muratori.

Late in the game, Tuccitto netted his second goal off another Saturno helper to make it 3-0 in the 76th minute. Less than a minute later, senior Ford Pender scored on an assist from fellow senior Carter Skidmore. Right after that, freshman Tyler Mucha scored on an assist from senior Jhonnyer Paida to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Huskies.

After earning the top spot in its conference, Morgan received a bye through the quarterfinal round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament. The Huskies will play No. 4 seed Old Saybrook in the semifinals at the Indian River Complex in Clinton on Tuesday, Oct. 30. With a win, the Huskies would advance to the final that’s slated for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.

Girls’ Soccer

The Huskies recorded a pair of wins during the final week of the 2018 regular season. Morgan defeated both Old Lyme and East Lyme by 1-0 finals to finish the regular season with a mark of 12-1-3 and secure the top seed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament.

On Oct. 22, the Huskies hosted Old Lyme and earned a 1-0 victory to clinch the top seed in Shorelines. The Huskies’ goal came in the first half, when senior captain Alyssa LeMay scored unassisted at the 23:40 mark. Old Lyme outshot Morgan by a 7-6 margin and saw senior Rebecca Cockley stand tall in net by making seven saves on the day.

The next day, Morgan headed to East Lyme and defeated the Vikings by a 1-0 margin in a game that was shortened on account of lightning. Morgan took eight shots on goal compared to East Lyme’s two. Cockley notched her 11th shutout of the season in the non-conference win. The Huskies scored in the first half on a goal from senior Grace Roman off a helper by LeMay in the 22nd minute. With 23 minutes left to play, the game was postponed due to lightning, and the Huskies walked off the field with the 1-0 win.

Morgan earned a bye through the quarterfinal round of the Shoreline Conference Tournament and will play the winner of East Hampton and Portland in the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31. A win in that contest would put the Huskies in the final that is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2.

Football

The Morgan football team earned a resounding road 41-7 road victory against Lewis Mills on Oct. 27. The win gives the Huskies their third on the season as they move to 3-4 overall with a record of 2-3 in the Pequot Conference Sassacus Division.

Morgan was propelled to the win by an outstanding game from senior captain quarterback JP Nye, who threw for four touchdowns and 325 yards on 20-for-29 passing. Senior receiver Deven Talaraczyk caught four passes for 84 yards and two TDs, while junior receiver Liam Whelan had six receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Michael Savage ran for 37 yards and scored a touchdown. On defense, senior Gabriel Furches totaled 10 tackles, including two for a loss, to go with a sack in the victory. Freshman Garret Garbinski added seven tackles for the Huskies.

Morgan came out relentless in the first quarter by scoring on a 2-yard pass from Nye to Whelan, followed by a run from Bryce Thomas on the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. Nye connected with Whelan again on a 33-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter. In the second quarter, Savage ran his way into the end zone from six yards out to make it 21-0. Before the end of the half, Nye got the ball to Talarczyk on a 13-yard touchdown pass to put the lead at 27-0.

After halftime, Lewis Mills (0-7, 0-5) scored its only points of the game on touchdown to make it 27-6. Later in the third, Nye threw a deep 50-yard pass to Talarczyk for a touchdown, after which Kayo Barros booted home the extra point for a 34-6 lead. Morgan scored its last TD of the game on a 6-yard run from Riley Jackson in the fourth quarter. Barros followed with another extra point to make it 41-6.

Up next, the Huskies will take on Cromwell-Portland (6-1, 5-1) in a Pequot Sassacus battle at Pierson Park in Cromwell at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.

Volleyball

The Huskies played two matches last week and came away with a split to finish the regular season with a record of 11-7. Morgan earned a 3-0 win against North Branford, before taking a 3-0 defeat versus Cromwell. The Huskies are playing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.

On Oct 22, the Huskies headed to North Branford, where they defeated the Thunderbirds via a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-17) sweep. Junior Charlotte Davenport produced a strong effort with seven kills, three aces, one block, four digs, and 10 receptions for Morgan. Senior Mackenzie Anderson tallied nine aces, six kills, four digs, one assist, and seven receptions. Other key contributors for the Huskies included junior Maggie Mahoney (4 kills, 2 aces, 3 blocks, 5 digs), sophomore Alexandra Kelly (4 blocks, 2 aces, 1 kill, 2 assists), and junior Sarah Kuever (10 assists, 3 digs, 1 block).

On Oct. 26, the Huskies lost a home contest against non-conference opponent Fitch by the score 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-12). Davenport provided six kills, three digs, and six receptions, while Kelly had four kills, five blocks, an assist, and one dig. Senior Ashley Annicelli added five blocks and two digs for the Huskies. Anderson had four kills, two aces, 16 receptions, five digs, and one assist.

No. 4 seed Morgan will play 5th-seeded Hale-Ray at home in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29. If the Huskies win, they would play the winner of No. 1 seed Coginchaug No. 8 seed North Branford on Wednesday, Oct. 31. A win in the semis would move Morgan into the Shoreline final at Cromwell High School at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.

Field Hockey

Morgan took a pair of defeats during the final week of the 2018 season. The Huskies finished with a record of 4-11-1 on the year.

On Oct. 22, Morgan lost a game at Valley Regional by a 1-0 score. Three days later, the Huskies hosted Suffield and dropped a 2-0 decision.

Boys’ Cross Country

Morgan competed at the Class SS State Championship and finished in 20th place as a squad at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 26.

Junior Chase Lofgren was Morgan’s top runner by finishing in 36th place with a time of 18 minutes 48 seconds in the state meet. Senior Justin Mucha (93rd, 20:29), sophomore Aiden Marais (105th, 20:55), senior Hayden Saranich (110th, 21:01), and senior Caleb Adams-Hull (136th, 22:11) also competed for Morgan. The Huskies also saw junior Lucas Morello (143rd, 22:30) and freshman Michael Fragola (145th, 22:31) take to the trails at states.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Huskies sent a handful of competitors to the Class SS State Championship that was held at Wickham Park last week.

Junior Leah McComiskey finished in 107th place by running a time of 25:30 for Morgan. Also competing for the Huskies at the state meet were sophomore Isabella Dowd (111th, 25:41), freshman Julia Walker (126th, 37:16), and senior Phoebe Sullivan (129th, 27:22).
