H-K Girls’ Cross Country Takes 2nd in States, Boys 4th; Football Beats North Branford, 27-6

Girls’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ cross country team finished as the runner-up at the Class SS State Championship last week. The Cougars came in second as squad by scoring 78 points to only place behind Immaculate with 31 points on Oct. 26 at Wickham Park.

Emma Anziano ran a time of 19 minutes and 33 seconds to finish in second place behind Wolcott’s Kathryn Rodrigues (19:02) for H-K in states. Following Anzaiano across the finish line were teammates Meara Bodak (12th, 20:36), Julia Callis (18th, 20:58), Lauren D’Amico (21st, 21:04), Ali Twachtman (25th, 21:14), Kylie Studzinski (42nd, 22:52), and Brianna Minervino (43rd, 22:53).

Boys’ Cross Country

The Cougars finished in fourth place at the Class M State Championship that was held on Oct. 26 at Wickham Park.

Matt Jennings led H-K by taking 10th place with a time of 16:42 at the meet. The Cougars’ other runners at states were Nate Carlson (20th, 17:14), Caleb Freeman (27th, 17:30), Christian Uzwiak (32nd, 17:44), Seth Freeman (37th, 17:56), Fisher Harris (39th, 18:00), and Kyle Criscuolo (46th, 18:19).

Football

Haddam-Killingworth improved to 6-1 on the season by earning a 27-6 victory at North Branford in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division matchup on Oct. 26. H-K also moved to 4-1 in divisional play with its win over the T-Birds (2-5, 1-4).

Dalton Brown rushed eight times for 153 yards with touchdown runs of 73 and 41 yards to lead the Cougars’ offense. He also had two interceptions on defense, including one for a 94-yard touchdown return. Tobey Callender rushed for 145 yards on 25 rushes in the win. Jordan Callahan kicked field goals from 25 and 27 yards and went 3-for-3 on extra points.

“Dalton Brown was the difference maker for us tonight. His speed on both offense and defense was tremendous, enabling him to score on two long touchdown runs and to return an interception almost the entire length of the field for another touchdown,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “Jordan Callahan also had an excellent game kicking the ball. Two field goals, three extra points, and clutch punts showed how important solid special-teams play is.”

The Cougars will face Pequot Sassacus opponent Lewis Mills (0-7, 0-5) on the road on Saturday, Nov. 3 at noon. H-K is currently ranked seventh in the Class S State Playoff Rankings in which the top eight teams qualify.

Volleyball

The Cougars finished the regular season with an impressive mark of 15-4 and will now begin postseason play.

H-K swept Lyman Memorial by a 3-0 score on Oct. 24, before earning a 3-2 win over East Hampton in its regular-season finale on Oct. 26.

Next up for the Cougars is the Shoreline Conference Tournament. H-K will face Cromwell in the first round at home on Monday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. If H-K wins there, it advances to the semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Another win would bring the defending-champion Cougars back to the final, which takes place on Friday, Nov. 2.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars recently completed their regular season with a record of 9-5-2 and are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.

H-K defeated Cromwell by a 3-2 final on Oct. 22. The Cougars then finished the regular season by taking a 7-2 loss to Cromwell on Oct. 25.

For the Shoreline Conference Tournament, the Cougars are seeded 3rd and will and host No. 6 Cromwell in the first round on Monday, Oct. 29 at 3:45 p.m. If it wins there, H-K competes in the semifinals at No. 2 Valley Regional on Tuesday, Oct. 30. A victory in that game would put the co-defending champion Cougars in the final versus either No. 1 Morgan or No. 4 Old Saybrook on Friday, Nov. 2.

Girls’ Soccer

H-K finished its campaign by posting a win over Hale-Ray last week.

The Cougars blanked Hale-Ray by the score of 6-0 on Oct. 24 to finish the year at 4-9-3 overall.

Field Hockey

H-K concluded its 2018 season by taking a pair of defeats last week.

The Cougars lost to Mercy by a 3-1 final on Oct. 23. H-K then took a 6-1 defeat to Guilford the next day to finish at 0-14-2 on the season.
