Easties’ Girls’ Soccer Clinches Spot in States; Football Takes 28-20 Loss to Guilford

Girls’ Soccer

The East Haven girls’ soccer squad punched its ticket into the Class L State Tournament by going 1-1-1 during a stretch of three SCC Hammonasset Division games last week The Yellowjackets have an overall record of 6-5-3 entering the final week of the regular season to go with a mark of 3-4-1 in divisional play.

On Oct. 15, East Haven hosted Lyman Hall and prevailed by a 1-0 score to secure the team’s spot in states. Senior Jenna Pane netted the lone goal of the game to lift the Yellowjackets to the win.

The Easties then went on the road and lost a 2-0 contest versus Guilford on Oct. 17. Two days later, East Haven battled West Haven to a 1-1 draw at home.

Head Coach Jake Hackett said that sophomore Angelina Munoz put on an amazing display of goalkeeping in the Guilford game. Freshman Emily Pycela scored East Haven’s goal in the tie against West Haven.

Coach Hackett also felt that Pane played three solid games on defense, while seniors Ali Szewc and Ashlie Rivera, and freshmen Kate Pycela and Alex Castro also had strong showings along the back line. Pycela and sophomore Bella Pilato continue to create offensive opportunities for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven lost three contests in SCC Oronoque Division play last week and is now 0-13-1 on the year.

On Oct. 15, the Easties took a 7-0 loss at Lyman Hall. Two days later, East Haven lost to Hamden by a 5-0 score at home. East Haven later took a 7-0 defeat against Branford on Oct. 17.

Football

The East Haven football team took its first loss of the season by dropping a 28-20 decision at Guilford in an SCC Tier 3 matchup on Oct. 19. The Yellowjackets are now 5-1 overall and have a record of 2-1 in SCC Tier 3 this year.

Guilford running back Charles Walcott ran for three touchdowns during the first half as the Indians took a 21-0 lead into the break against East Haven. In the third quarter, Yellowjackets’ senior fullback Ryan Cordova brought home two long touchdown runs to make it a 21-14 game. Cordova ran 59 yards for a score early in the third quarter, before rattling off a 56-yard touchdown with a few seconds left in the frame. Senior Evan Damian kicked the extra points after both TDs by Cordova, who ran nine times for 161 yards in the game.

On Guilford’s next possession, the Indians went on a drive that finished with an 8-yard touchdown pass to make it a two-score game with 2:03 left to play. The Yellowjackets closed the game with an 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Tanner DiVito to junior receiver Kaymond Quattlebaum as time expired.

This week, the Yellowjackets return home to play SCC Tier 2 team Wilbur Cross (3-3) on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The Yellowjackets split a pair of SCC Oronoque battles last week to move to 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the division. East Haven earned a 3-0 victory on the road against Hillhouse on Oct. 15. Two nights later, the Yellowjackets lost a 3-1 home match versus Guilford on Pink Night.

East Haven defeated Hillhouse behind scores of 25-17, 25-6, 25-15. Sophomore Kayla Goodrich had six kills and three aces, sophomore Carly Cordova recorded three kills with five aces, and sophomore Tori Heaphy finished with five aces and four digs.

In the match with Guilford, the Indians earned the win by the score of 25-18, 25-13, 24-26, 25-17. Senior captain Diana Kalman had nine kills, senior captain Megan Roberts finished with 10 digs, and junior Bella Ragaini added 27 assists for the Yellowjackets.

Boys’ Cross Country

East Haven competed at the SCC Championship and finished in 19th place East Shore Park in New Haven on Oct. 19.

Senior Zach Vallas posted East Haven’s top time by crossing the finish line in 21 minutes and 20 seconds, while sophomore Jeff Maffeo finished in 21:39. Also running for the Yellowjackets were senior Giro Esposito (23:02), junior Jon Mulero (25:14), and freshman Ryan Sieng (30:35).

Girls’ Cross Country

The Yellowjackets finished in 18th place at last week’s SCC Championship.

Sophomore Nicole Pendziwater finished with a time of 25:04, and senior Caitlin Brockett ran a time of 25:25 for the Easties. Junior Andreina Magana (30:13), junior Rebecca Albert (30:13), junior Riya Patel (31:43), and junior Kayla Vernon (34:00) also competed for East Haven at SCCs.
