North Haven Football Stays Unbeaten with Win Versus Brookfield; Boys’ Soccer Qualifies for States

Football

The North Haven football squad remains undefeated in 2018 after earning a 17-7 road victory versus Brookfield in a non-conference contest on Oct. 12. Head Coach Anthony Sagnella’s squad improved to 5-0 on the year with its win over previously beaten Brookfield, which dropped to 4-1 with the loss.

With the Indians trailing 7-0 at halftime, Nick Dodge rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the second half for North Haven, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. The senior captain finished the game with 16 carries for 131 yards. Junior Chase DiCarlo kicked a fourth-quarter field goal to give North Haven some insurance and help secure the victory.

North Haven’s game with Brookfield was played as part of the Connecticut High School Football Alliance, which is a two-week series of crossover games between teams from the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC), the Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC), and the South-West Conference (SWC). North Haven, which plays in the SCC, won both of its games versus its SWC opponents this year after previously claiming a 41-20 victory against Masuk on Sept. 14.

Brookfield recorded the first score of the night on a 5-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead into halftime. On their opening series of the second half, the Indians went on a drive that finished with Dodge’s 28-yard touchdown run just 1:28 into the third quarter. DiCarlo kicked the extra point and the game was tied 7-7. Later in the frame, Brookfield went on a drive that reached the North Haven 10-yard line, but the Bobcats lost a fumble that was recovered by senior Kevin Anasoulis, and the Indians regained possession.

With 6:25 remaining in the game, Dodge scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to put North Haven in the lead for good. DiCarlo’s extra point made the score 14-7 in favor of the Indians. DiCarlo later kicked a 28-yard field goal that put the game away by staking North Haven to a 17-7 advantage with just 25 seconds to go.

Junior Corey Hooks ran the ball 14 times for 56 yards, senior Noah Pastore had eight rushes for 43 yards, and senior captain Devan Brockamer had nine carries for 34 yards to aid North Haven’s ground game. Senior Albert Hooks also caught a 17-yard pass from Dodge in the victory. On defense, Albert Hooks had 14 tackles for North Haven, while Dodge made 11 tackles.

The Indians will now gear up for an SCC Tier 1 clash against unbeaten Shelton at Vanacore Field on Friday, Oct. 19. Shelton enters the game with an overall record of 5-0 and a mark of 3-0 in SCC Tier 1. North Haven is 2-0 in SCC Tier 1 games this year.

Boys’ Soccer

North Haven recorded a pair of 1-0 victories last week to improve to 6-4-1 on the season and qualify for the Class L State Tournament. The Indians earned wins against Sheehan and Law and are now on a four-game winning streak.

The Indians started off last week by posting a 1-0 home victory over Sheehan at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 9. Following a scoreless first half, senior AJ Fraschilla scored the only goal of the game on an assist from sophomore Kasey Mongillo about four and a half minutes into the second half. North Haven completed a season sweep of Sheehan with this win after having previously defeated Sheehan 1-0 on the road on Sept. 14.

Then on Oct. 13, North Haven was on the road to face Law and claimed a 1-0 victory to qualify for the Class L State Tournament. This win sealed up another season sweep for the Indians, who had recently earned a 2-0 home victory against the Lawmen on Oct. 1.

Girls’ Soccer

North Haven squared off against fellow SCC Quinnipiac Division squad Mercy for a home game on Oct. 10. The Indians took a 4-1 defeat versus the Tigers at North Haven Middle School. North Haven now has an overall record of 3-6-2 and a record of 0-3-1 in the division this season.

Volleyball

One week after making states, North Haven continued its winning ways by notching a pair of victories in SCC Oronoque Division action last week. The Indians won a five-setter against East Haven and then shut out Hillhouse to improve to 10-4 overall with a record of 4-3 in the division this year. Head Coach Brianna Kleckner’s squad has now won eight of its last 10 matches.

On Oct. 10, the Indians had a match in East Haven and claimed a 3-2 victory versus the Yellowjackets. North Haven was down two sets to one, but ultimately rallied for a 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-10 win in the divisional contest. Senior Giselle Zumerchik had 21 kills with seven aces and five digs, senior Peyton Davis had 13 digs and four kills, and fellow senior Carly Brown posted seven digs with five aces for North Haven. This win avenged the Indians’ previous 3-0 defeat in East Haven on Sept. 17.

On Oct. 12, the Indians hosted Hillhouse and prevailed by the final score of 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-15) for another victory in Oronoque play. Junior Eryn Sheeley served up seven aces, while Davis had five kills and six aces to help North Haven complete its season sweep of the Academics.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Indians hosted fellow SCC Division I squad Amity for a matchup at Gawrych Town Pool on Oct. 12. North Haven dropped a 97.5-86.5 decision against the Spartans and now has a record of 6-3 on the season.

Sophomore Maddie Bergin took first place in 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.54 seconds and also won the 500 freestyle behind a time of 5:20.39 for North Haven. Junior Angela Gambardella finished first for the 200 individual medley (2:12.89) to go with a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.62). In the diving competition, junior Ava Santacroce totaled a score of 233.70 points to finish in first place. North Haven’s 200 medley relay of freshman Brooke Nebor, Gambardella, sophomore Riley Jooss, and Bergin placed first with a season-best time of 1:53.54. The 200 freestyle relay featuring Gambardella, Jooss, Nebor, and Bergin posted a season-best mark of 1:44.20.

Junior Mackenzie Montesi finished the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:08.72 for North Haven. Head Coach Martha Phelan also noted the performance of freshman diver Brooke Waldron, who completed her first reverse dive during the meet.

Field Hockey

The Indians played one game last week when they hosted Lyman Hall at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 12. North Haven took a 3-1 defeat to move to 0-9-1 on the year.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians split a tri-meet against two SCC Oronoque Division opponents to finish their regular season with a record of 10-4. North Haven earned a 24-35 win against Branford and lost a 15-48 contest versus host Wilbur Cross at East Rock Park in New Haven on Oct. 12.

Next up for North Haven is the SCC Championship. The meet is being held at East Shore Park in New Haven on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

North Haven completed its regular season by competing against a pair of SCC Oronoque Division opponents at East Rock Park on Oct. 12. The Indians took a 20-37 loss against Branford and dropped an 18-48 decision versus Wilbur Cross to finish the regular season with a record of 6-8.

The next meet for the Indians is the SCC Championship, which takes place at East Shore Park at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18.
