Morgan’s Girls’ Soccer and Volleyball Squads Make Their Way to States

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team had another nice week by recently notching two wins and a tie, while qualifying for the Class M State Tournament in the process. The Huskies earned wins versus North Branford and Portland, as well as a tie against Norwich Free Academy, to improve to 7-2-3 this season.

On Oct. 8, Head Coach Steve Sullivan’s squad headed to North Branford and picked up a 2-0 victory against the Thunderbirds. The Huskies took an early 1-0 advantage and held off the T-Birds until they put an insurance goal on the board late in the contest. Morgan qualified for the postseason with this win. Senior Madison Emmi scored a goal at the 5:38 mark off an assist from senior captain Alyssa LeMay. LeMay put the game away with an unassisted goal at the 70:20 mark in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cockley made 10 saves in the game.

Two days later, the Huskies continued their road trip by venturing to Portland, where they won another game by a 2-0 final. Morgan’s stifling defense kept the Highlanders off the board all game as no goals were scored until the second half. The Huskies netted their first goal when LeMay scored at 60:40 off a helper from fellow senior Chloe Bousquet. At the 63:03 mark, the seniors connected again for a goal with LeMay assisting Bousquet for a 2-0 lead. Cockley had seven saves in the winning effort.

On Oct. 13, Morgan played another road game when the Huskies traveled to battle Class LL opponent Norwich Free Academy. Both teams fought valiantly and neither could come away with the victory in a 2-2 tie.

Norwich Free Academy got out to 1-0 lead with an early goal and extended that advantage by scoring another before the end of the first half. After coming out of halftime down 2-0, Morgan rallied with a dominating second-half effort. LeMay kicked one into the net off an assist from sophomore Carley Schmidt at the 47-minute mark to draw the score closer at 2-1. Then in the 60th minute, Schmidt scored a goal that was assisted by junior Maura Kelly to tie the game at 2. Cockley stopped seven shots in goal for Morgan.

Boys’ Soccer

The Huskies had two contests last week and came away with a split to move to 9-2-1 on the season. Morgan lost to East Lyme and then defeated North Branford in last week’s action.

On Oct. 8, Morgan hosted East Lyme at the Indian River Complex and dropped a 4-2 match against the Vikings.

The next day, North Branford came to the Indian River Complex and Head Coach Ross Demay’s team routed the Thunderbirds by 7-0 margin. Morgan got on the board in the 10th minute with a score from senior David Saturno off an assist from junior Nate Rice. A minute later, junior Zach Tuccitto scored off a helper from Saturno to make it 2-0. In the 15th minute, Jhonnyer Paida scored on an assist from Max Skidmore. Five minutes after that, senior Matt Zoner scored a goal that was assisted by junior Justin Castro to finish the first half with a 4-0 Morgan advantage.

In the second half, Tuccitto added a goal in the 43rd minute off another Saturno assist. Just two minutes later, sophomore Sean Cafferty scored off an assist from Paida. Saturno added the final goal for the Huskies in the 66th minute on a helper from freshman Tyler Mucha.

Volleyball

Morgan came away with one win in their three matches last week, but it was a big victory that qualified for the Huskies for the Class S State Tournament. Morgan made states by earning a 3-1 win over Hale-Ray on Oct. 11. The team now has a record of 8-5 this fall.

On Oct. 9, Morgan hit the road to face Haddam-Killingworth and lost a 3-0 contest behind sets of 26-24, 25-17, and 25-20. Junior Charlotte Davenport had 22 digs, 18 receptions, three blocks, two aces, and two kills, while senior Mackenzie Anderson provided four kills, seven digs, and eight receptions. Junior Sarah Kuever put up nine assists, six digs, two blocks, and one kill for the Huskies, who saw junior Maggie Mahoney record four kills, two blocks, and three digs. Senior Ashley Baldwin had 11 receptions and four digs for Morgan. Senior Nikole Salinas supplied four kills with one ace, two blocks, four digs, three assists, and 10 receptions in the match.

Two days later, Morgan defeated Hale-Ray at home by a 3-1 (25-21, 25-13, 18-25, 25-21) score to qualify for states. Anderson had a huge night by recording 11 kills, 10 aces, 18 digs, and seven receptions in the victory. Davenport added six kills, two blocks, a dig, and 15 receptions; Keuver had 18 assists, six digs, two blocks, and one ace; and Mahoney posted six blocks to go with five kills, one dig, and an assist. Salinas had five kills, three aces, three blocks, 22 receptions, 17 digs, and one assist, while senior Ashley Annicelli had three kills to go with one ace, three blocks, and one assist.

On Oct. 12, the Huskies lost a 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-19) decision against East Hampton at home. Salinas had six kills, four blocks, 11 digs, six assists and seven receptions; Mahoney had four kills, seven blocks, and two digs; and Anderson recorded six kills to go along with one ace, a block, 12 digs, one assist, and nine receptions. Additionally, Baldwin had 12 receptions and 16 digs, Davenport notched four kills, one ace, five blocks, 19 digs, and 16 receptions; Kuever had 12 assists, nine digs, three blocks, one ace, and one kill; and Annicelli contributed one kill, and ace, one block, and five receptions for Morgan.

Field Hockey

The Huskies split a pair of games last week to move to 4-6-1 on the year.

On Oct. 10, the Morgan hosted Sacred Heart Academy at the Indian River Complex and dropped a 3-2 decision against the Sharks. Three days later, Morgan had another home contest that saw them rout Norwich Free Academy by an 8-1 score.

Football

Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth at Peters Complex on Oct. 12 and dropped a 63-22 decision against the Cougars in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division game. The Huskies are now 1-4 overall with a record of 1-3 in the division.

Senior captain quarterback JP Nye threw for 318 yards a pair of touchdowns for Morgan. Senior AJ Fritz hauled in seven receptions for 124 yards in the contest. Junior Liam Whelan caught eight passes for 87 yards, and senior Michael Savage has four catches for 81 yards.

On defense, Savage and fellow senior Hunter Kyhn led the Huskies by making nine tackles apiece, while senior Matt Luchuk had eight tackles. Junior Benjamin Lichack recorded a sack with three tackles, and senior Bryce Thomas added five tackles.

H-K (5-1, 3-1) got on the board first with a touchdown run to make it 6-0 early in the first quarter. Shortly after that, the Cougars put it on the ground again for another touchdown and followed with the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 advantage. Morgan brought it to a one-score game at 14-7 on a 12-yard pass from Nye to Caldwell, followed by an extra point from sophomore Kayo Barros. The Cougars went up 21-7 with a 48-yard pass touchdown pass. Before the end of the first quarter, H-K got into the end zone again on a run on a 14-yard run to make it 28-7. The Cougars added to their lead with a 24-yard TD pass that ended up being the only score of the second quarter. H-K led the Huskies 35-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Cougars hit on a 42-yard scoring pass for a 42-7 lead. Morgan got back on the board with an 11-yard TD pass from Nye to Caldwell to make it 42-14 after Barros’s extra point. The Cougars responded with a long run to go up 49-14. In the final quarter, H-K broke a 31-yard touchdown run to take a 56-14 advantage. Morgan scored on the ensuing kickoff when Thomas ran the ball back 90 yards for a score to make it 56-22. H-K scored the last touchdown of the night on a 45-yard run for the 63-22 final.
