H-K Football Races Past Morgan, 63-22; Cross Country Teams Complete Unbeaten Regular Seasons

The Haddam-Killingworth football team improved its record to 5-1 after defeating Morgan for the second time in three weeks on Oct. 12. H-K went on the road and recorded a 63-22 victory versus Morgan at the Peters Complex in Clinton. The Cougars had previously defeated the Huskies by a 37-22 score at home on Sept. 21.

Dalton Modehn rushed for 125 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries for H-K in its lopsided win versus Morgan (1-4). Tobey Callender ran for 117 yards on 10 carries and caught two touchdown passes from James Murphy to aid the Cougars, who racked up 501 yards of total offense. Zach Kauffman also rushed for 125 yards and a TD on 10 carries. Dalton Brown rounded out the scoring for H-K with a pair of touchdowns.

“We could have given the game ball to many people tonight. Tobey Callender and Dalton Modehn both had excellent offensive games again. Each rushed for over 100 yards, and Tobey caught two passes for touchdowns,” said Head Coach Mike Baklik. “In addition, Zach Kauffman also played an excellent game. I’m proud of the entire team. They’re playing like a true team at the right point in the season.”

Following a bye week, the Cougars will face North Branford (2-3) on the road on Friday, Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. H-K is ranked ninth in the Class S State Playoff rankings. The top eight teams qualify for the postseason.

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

Haddam-Killingworth’s boys’ and girls’ cross country squads wrapped up perfect dual-meet seasons last week.

On Oct. 10, the Cougars traveled to Hale-Ray High School to compete in the Shoreline Conference Mega Meet. Both teams went undefeated on the afternoon to finish their dual-meet seasons with records of 14-0. This is the fifth consecutive year that the boys’ team has gone undefeated, having amassed a record of 76-0 during that span. The girls’ team has also gone undefeated for the fourth straight season and compiled a record of 59-0 in that time.

In last week’s meet, the boys were paced by Matt Jennings, who placed second in the race with a time of 18:23. He was followed by Seth Freeman (3rd, 18:26), Caleb Freeman (5th, 18:32), Sean Rutledge (7th, 18:50), and Fisher Harris (8th, 18:56). The Cougars defeated Old Lyme (15-50), Portland (15-50), Old Saybrook (22-39), Cromwell (18-45), and Valley Regional (15-48) at the meet.

The girls were led by Emma Anziano, who won the race in a time of 22:37. Crossing the line behind her were sophomore Meara Bodak (4th, 22:51), Julia Callis (5th, 22:54), Lauren D’Amico (9th, 23:10), and Ali Twachtman (10th, 23:13). H-K bested Old Lyme (15-48), Coginchaug (19-44), Portland (15-50), Old Saybrook (21-36), and Valley Regional (19-44) to cap off its unblemished regular season.

Previously, on Oct. 6, H-K traveled to Thetford, Vermont to compete in the Woods Trail Run, which featured more than 50 teams from New England, The boys’ team placed fourth overall out of 51 schools as the Cougars scored 260 points. H-K was once again led by Jennings, who crossed the finish line in a time of 17:44 to place 20th overall for the 3.1-mile course. Christian Uzwiak placed 44th overall in a time of 18:18 and was followed by Nate Carlson in 58th (18:30), Seth Freeman at 66th (18:36), and Caleb Freeman in 78th (18:44) to round out the team scoring.

The girls’ team also had a good afternoon as H-K placed 13th overall and scored 393 points. The girls were led by Anziano, who finished 20th overall with a time of 20:54 for the 5,000-meter course. She was followed by Bodak at 58th (21:57), Callis in 82nd (22:23), D’Amico at 118th (22:43), and Twachtman in 148th (23:15).

Volleyball

H-K is sporting a record of 10-4 after winning two of its three matchups on the court last week.

The Cougars swept Morgan by a 3-0 score on Oct. 9. H-K then lost a 3-1 contest to Coginchaug the next day. On Oct. 13, the Cougars took on Cromwell on Oct. 13 and posted a 3-0 victory.

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars picked up an 8-0 victory against Westbrook on Oct. 9 and can clinch a Class M State Tournament berth with their next win. H-K improved its record to 5-3-2 on the season with its win versus the Knights.

Girls’ Soccer

H-K split two contests last week and now stands at 3-6-3 overall for the year.

H-K blanked Westbrook by the score of 4-0 on Oct. 8. The Cougars then took a 3-0 defeat against East Hampton the next day.

Field Hockey

H-K took losses against Westbrook and North Branford last week and is now 0-8-2 on the year.

The Cougars lost by a 4-0 final versus Westbrook on Oct. 9. Four days later, H-K took a 5-0 loss to North Branford.
