Guilford’s Cross Country, Volleyball Squads Claim Division Crowns; Football Wins Big Versus Notre Dame-Fairfield

Girls’ Cross Country

The Guilford girls’ cross country team finished its dual-meet season with the SCC Hammonasset Division crown and a perfect 10-0 record after defeating Law and Hand in a tri-meet last week.

Guilford claimed victories versus host Law (15-50) and Hand (22-33) at Eisenhower Park in Milford on Oct. 10. Meredith Bloss crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 19 minutes and 27 seconds for the Indians. Clara Wiesler finished in third place with a time of 20:45, Gianna Siciliano took fifth in 21:24, Olivia Skapczynski came in sixth place with a 21:39, and Emma Bonz finished seventh at 21:41 to help Guilford go undefeated in the regular season.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians concluded their dual-meet campaign with a record of 7-3 after sweeping a tri-meet last week. The Indians earned their fourth straight SCC Hammonasset Division title and 10th overall since 2008 by defeating Law (18-43) and Hand (24-31) at Eisenhower Park on Oct. 10.

Elijah Dillon won the race in a time of 17 minutes and 17 seconds for Guilford. Ben Crair came in second place at 17:23, Will Dinauer finished seventh in 18:01, Griffin Hughes took eighth place with a time of 18:04, and McKendry Eschinger finished ninth for the Indians by finishing in 18:06.

Football

The Guilford football team improved to 2-2 on the year after recording a convincing win over Notre Dame-Fairfield last week. Guilford defeated the Lancers by the final score of 40-19 in a home game on Oct. 12.

Guilford started out by establishing a 21-point lead in the first half against the Lancers (0-5), who responded by scoring 19 consecutive points. However, Guilford went on to score three more touchdowns and pull away for the non-conference victory.

Charles Walcott had a huge night on the ground for Guilford by carrying the ball 23 times for 334 yards and two touchdowns. Ethan Vashel had four rushes for 42 yards and two rushing TDs in the victory. He also completed four passes for 91 yards. Charles Schioppo ran the ball 12 times for 34 yards and rushed for a touchdown. On defense, Jackson Tandler recorded three sacks and had five tackles that went for a loss of yardage.

“Defensively, we played well. I am certainly pleased we got the win,” said Head Coach Anthony Avallone. “I know we need to clean up our game, minimize our penalties, tackle better, and simply just execute better.”

The Indians will next face East Haven (5-0) for an SCC Tier 3 contest at home on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Guilford improved to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division following a pair of 3-0 sweeps last week. The Indians have clinched their second straight Oronoque Division title.

Guilford took a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) defeat against Cheshire on Oct. 9. The Indians got on the other end of the broom by sweeping Hillhouse 3-0 the following night. Guilford then defeated Foran by a 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-13) score on Oct. 12 to seal the division title.

Hunter Halbower had 10 kills and four blocks for Guilford in its win over Foran. Emma Appleman posted 10 kills with six digs, while Eva Ott Hill contributed 20 assists, three kills, and three digs to aid Indians.

Field Hockey

The Indians played two games last week and scored two more wins to run their record to 10-1-1 on the season.

Guilford edged out Amity by a 2-1 score on Oct. 9. Four days later, Indians notched a 6-0 shutout versus Hamden to reach double-digit wins for the year.

Boys’ Soccer

Guilford recorded victories against Foran and Old Lyme last week and now stands with a record of 6-5-1 overall. The Indians are also 3-0-1 in the SCC Oronoque Division and have clinched a berth in the Class L State Tournament.

Guilford narrowly defeated division rival Foran by a 1-0 final on Oct. 10. Facing Old Lyme on Oct. 13, the Indians upended the Wildcats by a 3-0 margin.

Girls’ Soccer

Guilford finished went 3-0 in a trio of SCC Hammonasset Division games last week. The Indians now have an overall record of 4-4-4 to go with a mark of 4-0-2 in divisional play.

The Indians started off last week by blanking Lyman Hall 6-0 on Oct. 7. Guilford then earned another shutout over a divisional foe by posting a 3-0 win versus West Haven on Oct. 9. After that, the Indians beat Lyman Hall for the second time on the week, this time by a 6-1 score on Oct. 12.
