North Haven Football Goes to 4-0 by Blowing Out Hillhouse; Volleyball Punches State Tourney Ticket

Football

The North Haven football team raised its record to 4-0 by posting a 49-14 blowout versus SCC Tier 2 opponent Hillhouse at Bowen Field in New Haven on Oct. 5.

Junior Corey Hooks had a breakout performance by running the ball 20 times for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Indians, who were further spurred by two rushing TDs from junior Max Augustine, plus one apiece by seniors Nick Dodge and Noah Pastore. Shamus Meehan threw a touchdown pass to fellow senior captain Devan Brockamer to help North Haven defeat Hillhouse, which dropped to 0-5 with the loss.

Hooks scored on a 2-yard touchdown run that gave North Haven a 7-0 lead with 4:09 to play in the first quarter following sophomore Chase DiCarlo's extra point. The Academics came back with a short TD run to make it 7-6 after one.

North Haven took control of the game by scoring the next six touchdowns, including three in the second quarter. Augustine ran one in from two yards out just 17 seconds into the period. Hooks scored on a 14-yard rush that was followed by Dodge's 2-point conversion run with two minutes to go in the half. Just 30 seconds later, Pastore scored on a 1-yard run to give the Indians a 28-6 advantage at intermission.

With 4:36 to play in the third quarter, Dodge broke off a 42-yard touchdown run and DiCarlo followed with the kick to extend the lead to 35-6. With 30 seconds left in the frame, Meehan connected with Brockamer for a 37-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-7 through three quarters.

Augustine put the icing on the cake with a 14-yard TD run late in the fourth. DiCarlo booted his fifth extra point of the night to give the Indians a 49-7 lead. Hillhouse returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown for the final score.

In addition to the huge game from Hooks, North Haven saw Dodge rush eight times for 88 yards in the victory. Brockamer ran five times for 42 yards, while Pastore gained 38 yards on seven carries. Meehan went 3-of-5 passing for 76 yards with Brockamer catching two of those passes for 61 yards. Junior Noah Perillie reeled in a 15-yard reception for the Indians. On defense, senior Albert Hooks made eight tackles, while Dodge and fellow senior Darren Major had six tackles apiece.

North Haven's next game will be an out-of-conference contest at Brookfield (4-0) on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

The Indians qualified for the Class L State Tournament after recording shutout victories versus Sacred Heart Academy and Career last week. The Indians, who also took a loss to Guilford, have an overall record of 8-4 on the year.

North Haven opened up the week by netting a 3-0 home win over Sacred Heart Academy on Oct. 1. Senior Peyton Davis recorded seven kills to go with six aces and seven digs, fellow senior Giselle Zumerchik had nine kills and three aces, and senior Olivia Petersen handed out 24 assists in the victory.

On Oct. 3, the Indians claimed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-9) victory at Career to qualify for states. Davis had seven kills, five digs, and three aces, senior Carly Brown posted six digs and had eight aces, while fellow senior Val Gimler served up seven aces for North Haven.

Two days later, North Haven took a 3-0 (25-23, 30-28, 25-21) home loss against SCC Oronoque Division opponent Guilford to drop to 1-3 in divisional play. Zumerchik had 11 kills with 10 digs and three aces, and Brown chipped in with 14 digs for the Indians.

Girls’ Soccer

North Haven had a nice week that saw the Indians a pair of shutout victories versus Wilbur Cross and then earn a tie against West Haven. With these results, North Haven improved its overall record to 3-5-2 for the year.

The Indians started off their week by notching a 6-0 home win against Cross at North Haven Middle School on Oct. 1. Two days later, North Haven faced Cross on the road and prevailed by a 5-0 score. On Oct. 5, the Indians had a game in West Haven and played the Blue Devils to a 1-1 tie. With North Haven trailing 1-0, sophomore Sophia Acquarulo scored the game-tying goal for the Indians with 27 minutes remaining in the game.

Boys’ Soccer

North Haven picked up a pair of wins by defeating both Law and East Haven in home games last week. The Indians evened their record at 4-4-1 on the year with these two victories.

The Indians hosted Law on Oct. 1 and prevailed by the final score of 2-0. Senior Ben Blumenthal and sophomore Eduardo Cienfuegos scored North Haven’s goals in the win.

On Oct. 5, the Indians hosted East Haven and defeated the Yellowjackets by a 9-0 final.

Field Hockey

North Haven took three defeats at home last week and is now 0-8-1 on the year.

The Indians lost a 4-0 home contest against Branford on Oct. 1. Two days later, North Haven hosted Guilford and lost by a 5-0 final. Then on Oct. 6, the Indians faced Amity at North Haven Middle School and took a 5-0 defeat.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians saw seven athletes run at the Wickham Park Invitational at Wickham Park in Manchester on Oct. 6. North Haven finished in 36th place out of 55 teams the boys’ unseeded race.

Senior Jack Opramolla finished in 58th place in a field of 391 runners for the 5K with a time of 18 minutes and 39 minutes. Senior Jackson Frank finished in 157th place (19:45), junior Aidan Bergin came in 198th place (20:10), sophomore Nick Howlett finished in 273rd (21:07), senior Alex Savenelli came in 296th place (21:32), senior Nick Cristante finished in 360th (23:30), and senior Max Petruzziello finished 362nd with a time of 23:31.

North Haven, which has a record of 9-3 on the year, will conclude its regular season with an SCC Oronoque Division tri-meet against Branford and Cross on Thursday, Oct. 11. The meet gets underway at 4 p.m. at Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven.

Girls’ Cross Country

North Haven was represented by three runners at last week’s Wickham Park Invitational.

Junior Regan Forbes came in 55th place out of 290 runners in the girls’ unseeded race by recording a time of 22 minutes and 49 seconds. Freshman Riley Minns finished 229th (27:24), while senior Lily Corcoran finished in 275th place (29:57) for North Haven.

The Indians, who are 6-6 overall, will wrap up their regular season with a meet against Cross and Branford at Wilbur Cross High School at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Indians took a loss to Cheshire and then defeated Hand in last week’s meets. North Haven now stands with a record of 6-2 this fall.

North Haven hosted Cheshire on Oct. 2 and dropped a 100-81 decision at Gawrych Town Pool. Junior Angela Gambardella took first place in both the 200 individual medley (2:12.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.93) for North Haven, while swimming season-best times in both events. Sophomore Maddie Bergin won the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.85 seconds to go with a season best of 5:19.26 in the 500 freestyle. North Haven’s 400 freestyle relay of Bergin, freshman Brooke Nebor, sophomore Riley Jooss, and Gambardella finished first by clocking in at 3:52.11.

Also posting season-best times for the Indians were freshman Abrielle Osborne in the 200 individual medley (2:38.93), freshman Grace Finch in the 50 freestyle (29.31), sophomore Molly Coyle in the 100 butterfly (1:10.75), and freshman Taya Laborde in the 100 freestyle (58.79).

On Oct. 5, the Indians had a home meet with Hand and won by the final score of 104-80. Bergin took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:57.86) and the 500 freestyle (5:20.18) for North Haven. Gambardella won the 200 individual medley in 2:12.80 and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.97. Freshman Brooke Nebor finished first in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 26.35. North Haven’s 200 medley relay of Laborde, Gambardella, Jooss, Bergin placed first in 1:56.52. The 200 freestyle relay of Nebor, freshman Noelle Carmody, freshman Scarlett Vogel, and junior Kiersten Winter came in first place behind a time of 1:47.89.

Carmody swam lifetime-best times in the 50 freestyle (26.69) and the 100 freestyle (59.21) for the Indians. Vogel had lifetime bests in the 50 freestyle (26.91) and the 100 freestyle (59.75), while junior Mia Coppola swam a lifetime best of 1:09.69 for the 100 freestyle. North Haven also saw the following athletes turn in season-best performance in its win versus Hand: Jooss in the 200 individual medley (2:22.47) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.10), Coyle in the 200 individual medley (2:34.60), junior Gillian Regan in the 200 freestyle (2:15.92), junior Marla Zikaras for the 100 butterfly (1:33.75), senior Emily Gibson in the 100 freestyle (1:05.43), junior Abby Kirtland in the 100 freestyle (1:05.90) and 100 backstroke (1:10.42), freshman Giulia Faulkner in the 500 freestyle (5:49.49), junior Mackenzie Montesi in the 500 freestyle (5:50.69), and junior Christina Stoeffler in the diving competition with a total of 147.70 points.
