Morgan Boys’ Soccer Headed Back to State Tourney; Girls’ Soccer, Volleyball Have Winning Weeks

Boys’ Soccer

The Morgan boys’ soccer squad added two more wins to its total last week to improve to 8-1-1 on the season. The Huskies, who defeated Cromwell and Haddam-Killingworth, have qualified for the Class S State Tournament one year after winning the title.

On Oct. 2, the Huskies blew out Cromwell at home behind a 4-0 victory. Senior Ford Pender grabbed the first goal in the 20th minute off an assist from fellow senior Carter Skidmore. Shortly into the second half, senior David Saturno scored on a penalty kick to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. Six minutes later, senior Zach Tuccitto put one in the back of the net off a helper from Saturno. Then with 10 minutes left in the contest, senior Jhonnyer Paida scored on an assist from fellow senior Calvin Jackson. Junior goalie Nick Rubino made two saves for the Huskies, who launched 18 shots at the Cromwell keeper.

Three days later, the Huskies defeated H-K on the road by a 5-1 final. Saturno picked up the first goal in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick to make it 1-0. Eight minutes later, H-K tied the game on an own goal by Morgan. The score stayed 1-1 until junior Justin Castro scored a goal off an assist from Saturno early in the second half. Tuccitto netted a goal in the 58th minute off an assist from sophomore Max Skidmore and then scored another in the 66th minute on a helper by Saturno. Senior John Hicks scored just before the final whistle on an assist from junior Matt Gardner. Rubino made two saves as Morgan totaled 19 shots in the contest.

Girls’ Soccer

The Huskies won two of their three games last week to move to 5-1-2 on the season. Morgan picked up its two victories against Haddam-Killingworth and Westbrook, while dropping a contest to Cromwell.

On Oct. 1, the Huskies hit the road to face the Panthers and lost by a 4-2 score. Senior captain Alyssa LeMay netted both of Morgan’s goals on the day. Cromwell struck first with a goal in the first half that put the score at 1-0, which was how it stood at halftime. LeMay notched her first goal at 44:28 on an assist from sophomore Carley Schmidt. Less than 10 minutes later, she scored an unassisted goal. Unfortunately, the Panthers proved too much to handle in the second half as they scored three more goals en route to the 4-2 win. Senior goalie Rebecca Cockley made eight saves in net for Morgan.

Three days later, Morgan hosted Haddam-Killingworth and defeated the Cougars 3-0. Senior Issy Ranaudo got the scoring started with a goal off a helper from junior Alyssa Smith at the 7:30 mark for a 1-0 lead in the first half. After halftime, Schmidt scored at 49:43 off an assist from LeMay to make it 2-0. Then during the final minutes, LeMay knocked in an unassisted goal at 74:16. Cockley had three saves as the Huskies outshot the Cougars 18-3.

On Oct. 6, Morgan scored a 5-0 win at Westbrook in a game where the Huskies outshot the Knights 26-1. Morgan got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half, before putting the game out of reach with two goals in the second half. Senior Kylee Clifton scored at the 13:20 mark off an assist from Schmidt. Less than two minutes later, Smith put on in the net on an assist by Clifton. At the 20:35 mark, freshman Taylor Maher scored on an assist from sophomore Clara Franzoni. In the second half, Schmidt scored a goal from Smith and Maher at the 53:40 mark. A little more than two minutes later, senior Jessie Flanagan scored off an assist from Schmidt. Three Huskies saw time in net with Cockley making the lone save in her 50 minutes of work. Junior Natalie Novarro (20 minutes) and sophomore Emma Lindsay (10 minutes) also played goalie for Morgan in the win.

Volleyball

Morgan was victorious in both of last week’s matches to boost its record to 7-3. Morgan picked up victories against North Branford and Valley Regional in last week’s action.

On Oct. 1, the Huskies grabbed a 3-0 victory at home against North Branford behind scores of 25-16, 25-9, and 25-18. Charlotte Davenport tallied seven kills, five digs, and four receptions, while junior Maggie Mahoney had six kills, four aces, a block, and two assists. Senior Nikole Salinas blocked two shots to go along with three kills, six aces, and 18 digs. Senior Mackenzie Andrerson put up four aces, three kills, a block, and two digs, and junior Sarah Kuever totaled 13 assists and five digs.

Two days later, Morgan hosted Valley Regional and defeated the Warriors 3-1 (25-12, 15-25, 25-11, 25-18). Anderson made eight kills to go with four aces, 12 digs, 13 receptions, and an assist, while Mahoney also had eight kills to complement her three aces, five blocks, a dig, and three assists. Davenport tallied four kills, an ace, three digs, and 10 receptions. Salinas provided four blocks, five kills, eight digs, and 12 receptions. Kuever handed out 23 assists to go with her seven digs, three blocks, and two kills in the win.

Field Hockey

The Huskies came away with one win in their three games last week for a record of 3-5-1 on the year.

On Oct. 1, the Huskies headed to North Branford and dropped a 4-0 contest. Two days later, Morgan grabbed a 2-0 victory over Haddam-Killingworth. On Oct. 5, the Huskies hosted North Branford and lost a 3-0 decision.
