Maher Resigns as Head Coach of Guilford Boys’ Soccer

Joe Maher resigned from his position as head coach of the Guilford High School boys’ soccer team on Oct. 1. Maher had been the longest-tenured head coach in the Southern Connecticut Conference after beginning his run as Indians’ head coach in 1994. Guilford, which has a record of 4-5-1 on the year, is now being led by interim Head Coach Curtis Gullette, who was previously an assistant coach for the club.

Maher piloted the Indians to Class LL state championships in the 1996 and 2000 seasons. They also finished as the Class LL runner-up in 1997 and 1999. More recently, Guilford earned back-to-back berths in the Class L State Tournament semifinals in each of the past two years.

Additionally, Guilford won the SCC Tournament in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2009 with Maher as head coach. The team also reached the SCC final in 2000, 2008, 2010, and 2013.

Prior to coaching at Guilford, Maher served as the men’s soccer head coach for the University of New Haven from 1981 until 1990, highlighted by an appearance in the 1984 NCAA Division II Tournament Final Four. The Chargers also reached the Elite Eight in 1981 and 1983 with Maher at the helm.
