The Westbrook field hockey team played two contests last week and came away with a win and a tie between the two games. The Knights defeated Old Saybrook and then played Valley Regional to a draw to move their record to 7-0-1 on the season, while qualifying for the Class S State Tournament in the process.

On Oct. 1, Westbrook hosted Old Saybrook and prevailed by a score of 2-1. Old Saybrook’s goal marked the first one that Westbrook allowed in the 2018 season. Junior Alex Young scored Westbrook’s first goal on a penalty corner with an assist by senior Carolyn Bauman. Senior captain Avery Bauman also picked up a goal on a helper from sophomore Elizabeth Gallagher. Sophomore Lauren Horne had four saves in the victory.

Three days later, the Knights headed to Valley Regional, where the two teams played to a 0-0 tie. Head Coach Janet Dickey felt that her defenders played well, especially the corner defense that included junior Young, sophomore Bailey Roberts, and junior Kendall Orlowski. Horne stopped eight shots to help preserve the tie.
