H-K’s Cross Country Teams Stay Perfect; Volleyball Qualifies for States

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

On Oct. 2, the Haddam-Killingworth cross country program traveled to Totoket Park in North Branford to be compete at the Floyd Parness Invitational. The Cougars ran against fellow Shoreline Conference squads Old Lyme, North Branford, Valley Regional, and Morgan at the meet. Both of H-K’s teams went swept the competition on the afternoon to continue their undefeated seasons and improve their respective records to 9-0.

The H-K boys’ team defeated all four of its opponents by the final score of 15-50. The Cougars ran as a pack at the front of the race and claimed the top 12 spots with the same time of 18 minutes and 49 seconds for the 3.1-mile course. The boys were led by Sean Rutledge, who was followed across the line by teammates Kyle Criscuolo, Seth Freeman, Matt Jennings, Nate Carlson, Fisher Harris, Dakota Tucker, Greyson Merola, Caleb Freeman, Owen Howes, Christian Uzwiak, and Griffin Robinson.

The girls’ team also had a clean sweep by defeating Old Lyme (18-44), Morgan (15-50), North Branford (15-50), and Valley (20-43). The Cougars ran as a pack up front and saw five athletes cross the finish line with the same time of 23:24 on the 5,000-meter course. Julia Callis, Emma Anziano, Meara Bodak, Ali Twachtman, and Lauren D’Amico finished in second through seventh place, respectively, for H-K. They were followed closely by Kylie Studzinski (8th, 23:45) and Sadie Strom (10th, 23:56).

Volleyball

The Cougars punched their postseason ticket when they netted their eighth victory of the campaign last week. H-K now has an overall record of 8-3 this fall.

H-K took a 3-2 defeat against The Sport & Medical Sciences Academy on Oct. 1. However, the Cougars promptly bounced back and qualified for the Class M State Tournament by claiming a 3-2 victory over Hale-Ray on Oct. 4.

Football

Haddam-Killingworth posted another impressive victory last week to boost its record to 4-1 on the year. The Cougars hosted Coventry-Windham Tech-Bolton-Lyman Memorial on Oct. 5 and scored a 56-13 triumph at H-K High School.

Tobey Callender ran for 217 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries to lead the Cougars’ rushing attack. Dalton Modehn also had a big night on the ground by gaining 133 yards to go with four TDs on 18 carries for Head Coach Mike Baklik’s squad.

“Tobey Callender and Dalton Modehn had excellent games tonight on both sides of the ball,” said Baklik. “To get two backs over 100 yards on the ground and one of them getting more than 200 yards is not only a credit to their individual abilities, but it also says a great deal about our offensive line. Every player on that unit really stepped it up tonight.”

The Cougars’ next game is on the road versus rival Morgan (1-3) at the Peters Complex in Clinton on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. H-K defeated Morgan by the score of 37-22 at home on Sept. 21.

Girls’ Soccer

H-K picked up a victory over Old Saybrook last week and is now 2-5-3 on the year.

The Cougars edged out Old Saybrook by the final score of 2-1 on Oct. 1. H-K then took a 3-0 loss to Morgan On Oct. 4, followed by a 3-0 defeat against Cromwell on Oct. 6.

Field Hockey

H-K is 0-7-2 on the season.

H-K played to a 1-1 draw versus Pomperaug on Oct. 1. The Cougars later took a 2-0 defeat against Morgan on Oct. 3 before a 6-0 loss to Stonington on Oct. 6.
