East Haven Volleyball Clinches State Tourney Berth; Girls’ Soccer Splits Pair with Branford

Volleyball

The East Haven volleyball team claimed a pair of victories last week to improve to 8-4 on the season and clinch a berth in the Class L State Tournament. The Yellowjackets, who blanked Law and won five-set marathon versus Foran, have qualified for states for the fifth consecutive year.

East Haven began its week by notching a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-23) victory over Law on Oct. 1. Senior Cameron Cordaway had two aces with five digs, while senior Alannah Doheny finished with nine kills and six digs in the win. Sophomore Tori Heaphy added seven digs for Head Coach Craig Brown’s club.

East Haven then faced Cheshire on Oct. 3 and took a 3-0 (20-25, 12-25, 16-25) defeat against the Rams. Senior captain Diana Kalman had eight kills for the Easties, and junior Samantha Schlottman recorded five kills in the defeat.

To cap off the week, the Yellowjackets rallied for a 3-2 (12-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-13) victory over fellow SCC Oronoque Division Foran on Oct. 5 to solidify their spot in states. Kalman had 15 kills, Cordaway posted eight digs, and junior Isabella Ragaini finished with 35 assists in the come-from-behind effort. The victory advanced East Haven’s record to 3-1 in SCC Oronoque action on the year.

Girls’ Soccer

The Yellowjackets split a pair of games against rival Branford, before taking a loss against Guilford last week. East Haven stands with an overall record of 3-3-2 at the midway point of its season.

To begin last week, East Haven played Branford on the road and lost a 2-1 contest on Oct. 1.

Following that loss, East Haven dropped a 2-1 decision versus SCC Hammonasset foe Guilford on Oct. 3 to move 1-2 in divisional action.

To finish the week, Branford and East Haven met up once again, and Easties came out victorious with a 2-1 win on Oct. 4. Sophomore forward Isabella Pilato put on an exceptional performance for East Haven by scoring both goals in the victory.

Head Coach Jake Hackett said that he was proud of how his team played during all three games on the week, highlighting the performances of senior captains Jenna Pane and Ali Szwec, along with fellow seniors Bojana Mitrovic and Victoria Meeker, and freshman Emily Pycela.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven suited up for three contests last week and took three defeats for a record of 0-9-1 on the year.

On Oct. 1, East Haven visited Foran and lost by a 6-0 score. Sophomore goalie Asa Myers made 10 saves in net for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets later took an 8-0 defeat against Harding on Oct. 3, followed by a 9-0 loss to North Haven on Oct. 5.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

East Haven-Wilbur Cross hosted Lyman Hall on Oct. 4 and lost by the score of 98-65. Despite the defeat, the Yellowjackets still turned in some quality performances throughout the meet.

Sophomore JJ Kim claimed first place in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke for the Easties. In the fly, Kim swam to a time of 1:03.27 to get the win. She followed that up by posting a mark of 1:06.34 for first place in the backstroke. East Haven-Cross saw more success in those two events as junior Alaiana Robert placed second in the 100 butterfly at 1:31.78, freshman Sophia Cumelar took second in the 100 backstroke with a 1:42.37, and sophomore Lesly Melendez finished third in the 100 backstroke at 1:56.07. Sophomore Alora McCarroll earned a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.52 to go with a third-place spot in the 200 individual medley at 2:39.38. Freshman Mackenzie Noyes took third in the 100 breaststroke at 1:41.34.

The Yellowjackets captured first and second place in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Kim, Cumelar, McCarroll, Noyes placed first at 4:45.83, and the group of Robert, senior Brianna Rivera, freshman Camryn Lendroth, and freshman Shea McNamera took second with a mark of 5:38.29. The 200 medley relay featuring Kim, McCarroll, junior captain Syreena Melendez, and junior Becca Flynn placed second at 2:13.90. The 200 freestyle relay of senior Krissia Flores, Rivera, Lendroth, and Flynn finished in third by timing in at 2:27.12.

Football

East Haven had a bye week for Week 5 play. The Yellowjackets, who are 4-0 on the year, will take the field for a home game against non-conference opponent Bethel (1-3) on Friday, Oct. 12. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
