Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country

The Haddam-Killingworth cross country program had a busy week that saw the Cougars compete at a major out-of-state invitational meet, after which they went up against a few of their familiar opponents in the Shoreline Conference.

On Sept. 22, H-K’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled to Goddard Park in Warwick, Rhode Island to run at the Ocean State Invitational, competing against more than 90 teams from five northeastern states. Out of 37 teams and 262 runners, the H-K boys’ team placed second overall with 126 points in the Division 1 race, only placing behind Brookfield. The Cougars were led by sophomore Matt Jennings, who placed sixth in the race with a time of 16 minutes and 45 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. Jennings was followed across the finish line by senior Seth Freeman, who placed 21st (17:31), along with junior Christian Uzwiak (29th, 17:44), senior Kyle Criscuolo (38th, 17:52), and sophomore Fisher Harris (41st, 17:54). The boys’ JV team also placed second overall by scoring 53 points to finish behind Tolland. Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Sean Rutledge, who placed seventh with a time of 18:27. The boys’ freshman team took home the title by scoring 40 points to beat out 17 other teams and finish in first. The freshmen were led by Dakota Tucker, who placed third with a time of 14:20 for the 2.5-mile course. Also finishing in the top 10 were Caleb Freeman (6th, 14:28) and Greyson Merola (8th, 14:34).

The H-K girls’ varsity team placed third out of 26 teams in the Division 1 race by scoring 178 points. The Cougars ran against Coginchaug, Cromwell, North Branford, Valley Regional, and Morgan at the meet. Both H-K teams went undefeated on the afternoon to begin their respective seasons with 5-0 records.

The boys’ squad ran as a pack toward the front of the race with its runners finishing 3rd through 10th with their times of 19:05 for the muddy, 3.1-mile course.
