The Old Saybrook-Westbrook (OS-W) football team earned its first win of the year by claiming a 33-20 victory at Lewis Mills in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division game on Sept. 30. The Rams now have an overall record of 1-3 on the season to go with a mark of 1-0 in the division.
Senior Landis Twomey put forth a strong performance on the ground for the Rams by rushing for three touchdowns in the second half versus Lewis Mills. OS-W jumped out to an early lead with a 5-yard touchdown pass from junior Jack McDowell to senior Max Thomas in the first quarter. Junior Cooper Pavlovich kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. Then in the second quarter, senior captain Dan Almada broke off a 50-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead following another Pavlovich extra point.
In the third quarter, OS-W blocked a punt by Lewis Mills that resulted in a touchdown. After that, Twomey took in a 14-yard run for his first touchdown of the game and a 21-0 lead after the Pavlovich kick.
In the final quarter, Lewis Mills’s offense finally put a score on the board with a deep pass. However, the Rams answered right back as Twomey carried ball over the goal line from four yards out to make it 27-7. Twomey scored again with a 27-yard run to extend the lead to 33-13, before Lewis Mills scored the game’s final touchdown.
Next up for the Rams is a home game versus divisional foe Valley Regional-Old Lyme (3-0, 2-0) at Old Saybrook High School at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
Boys’ Soccer
The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer team earned a win and took a loss in its slate of two games last week. The Rams now have a record of 4-2-1 on the season.
On Sept. 24, the Rams scored a 5-2 win on the road against Westbrook. Three days later, Old Saybrook dropped a 2-1 contest at Cromwell.
Girls’ Soccer
The Rams played two matches last week and came away with a tie and a loss to move to 1-5-1 this year.
On Sept. 26, Old Saybrook hosted Haddam-Killingworth and the two teams played to a 0-0 tie. Two days later, Old Saybrook hosted Cromwell and lost a 1-0 contest against the Panthers.
Field Hockey
Old Saybrook faced Morgan at the Indian River Complex and batted the Huskies to a 2-2 tie on Sept. 26. With the draw, the Rams now have a record of 2-3-1 on the season.
