Guilford Volleyball Clinches State Tourney Berth; Mayo Breaks School Record in the Butterfly

Volleyball

The Guilford volleyball team won two of its three matches last week to improve to 8-2 for the season and qualify for the Class L State Tournament. Guilford toppled Amity and East Haven, before dropping a contest against Cheshire in last week’s action.

On Sept. 24, Guilford defeated Amity by the final score 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23). Sophomore Emma Appleman led the charge with 19 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Juliet Young contributed a team-leading 13 digs in the win. Junior Eva Ott Hill finished the match with 28 assists for the Indians, who recorded 10 aces as a squad.

Following that victory, the Indians defeated East Haven 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21) in an SCC Oronoque Division contest on Sept. 26. Appleman once again led the team in kills as she hammered home 17 in the match. Young had 13 digs, and Ott Hill added 25 assists to help Guilford improve to 3-1 in the division.

To close out the week, Guilford took a 3-0 (25-2, 25-21, 20-15) defeat to Cheshire on Sept. 28. Appleman had 10 kills, 12 digs, and three blocks; Young had 17 digs, and senior Hunter Halbower finished with six kills and six blocks for Head Coach Laura Meyer’s club.

Field Hockey

The Indians came away with a win and a tie last week to improve to 5-1-1 for the year. On Sept. 26, the Indians played to a 1-1 draw with Hand. Three days later, Guilford defeated Glastonbury by the final score of 5-0 in a home game.

In the victory over Glastonbury, senior Celia Mariconda netted a pair of goals and added an assist for the Indians. Senior captain Emily Torre, junior Ella Stanley, and sophomore Hannah Tiller also scored goals for Guilford. Senior Janie Danaher had two assists, while Tiller, Stanley, Torre, and freshman Maddie Epke each finished with one assist.

Boys’ Soccer

The Indians earned a tie and took a loss last week to move to 3-3-1 on the year.

On Sept. 24, Guilford hosted Amity and played the Spartans to a 1-1 tie in an SCC Quinnipiac Division game. Senior Hugh Medvecky’s goal in the second half evened the score and helped the Indians pull off the draw. The Indians now stand at 2-0-1 in divisional play.

Two days later, the Indians took a 2-0 defeat in Branford.

Football

Guilford was on the road to face Shelton last week and took a 49-7 loss against the Gaels on Sept. 28. The Indians now have a record of 1-2 on the season.

Guilford scored its touchdown midway through the second quarter on a 24-yard run by junior Charles Schioppo. Senior captain Tyler Filley converted the extra point for the Indians.

The Indians have a bye week for Week 5. Guilford will host to Notre Dame-West Haven on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

Guilford took on Mercy on Sept. 26 and won the meet by a 21-40 score to improve to 8-0 this year. Senior Meredith Bloss achieved the top time at the meet as she finished in 20 minutes and 47 seconds to lead the Indians to victory.

Boys’ Cross Country

The Indians took a loss to Xavier last week and now 5-3 on the season. Senior Elijah Dillon ran a time of 19 minutes and 13 seconds to finish in fifth place for the Indians.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

Guilford took a 92-73 defeat against Hamden on Sept. 24 and then dropped a 99-78 decision versus Lyman Hall on Sept. 27. In the Hamden meet, junior Alex Mayo set her third school record as her time of 1:04.39 in the 100 butterfly broke Sarah Stockman’s mark that stood since 2003. Mayo also holds school records in the 200 and 500 freestyles for the Indians.

Mayo’s school-record time in the butterfly earned her second place versus Hamden. She also took first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.50. Guilford’s other first-place finish came in the 100 freestyle as sophomore Haley Moriarty clocked in at 1:00.13. Moriarty also took third in the 200 IM at 2:34.29.

Freshman Brynn Leslie earned a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle at 2:17.75 for Guilford. Senior Chloe Shoff placed second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:26.70. Sophomore Julia Earle took second in the 100 backstroke at 1:16.08 and was third for the 50 freestyle at 29.74.

All three of Guilford’s relays finished in second place at the meet. The 200 medley relay of Earle, Shoff, senior Liz Hicks, and junior Audrey Rowan finished at 2:22.14; the 200 freestyle relay of Mayo, Earle, Leslie, and Moriarty recorded a time of 1:53.19; and the 400 freestyle relay team of Leslie, Moriarty, Hicks, and Mayo clocked in at 4:09.29.

Against Lyman Hall, senior diver Sadie Booth scored 175.9 points for her six-set performance to qualify for the Class L State Championship. In other action, Mayo finished first in the 50 freestyle at 26.09 and also won the 500 freestyle in 5:27.32. Shoff earned a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.47) for the Indians. Earning third place marks in their respective events were Earle in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.42) Hicks in the 200 freestyle (2:27.38), Leslie in the 200 individual medley (2:40.82) and freshman Natalie Bryan in the 100 butterfly (1:27.02).

During the previous week, Guilford lost contests against Branford (93-85) and North Haven (84-69). Booth competed as Guilford’s first diver since the inception of the team and was impressive in her six-dive set, totaling 170.85 points for first place. Mayo earned a pair of first-place finishes as she won in the 200 IM in 2:20.79 and the 500 freestyle at 5:31.39. The 200 freestyle relay of Leslie, Hicks, Mayo, and Moriarty earned the top place with a time of 1:53.55. The team of sophomore Piper Doheny, freshman Hanna Dang, senior Rachel Lai, and freshman Alissa Chen placed third in the event at 2:12.36. Moriarty claimed second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (27.56) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.74). Shoff took second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:26.21 for the Indians. Leslie finished second in the 200 freestyle at 2:15.86. Hicks placed second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.74) and finished third in the 200 freestyle (2:23.38). Booth finished in third in the 100 backstroke at 1:17.53. The 200 medley relay of Earle, Shoff, Bryan, and Rowan finished in second with a time of 2:22.87.

Against North Haven, Mayo placed second in the 100 freestyle (56.87) and the 200 freestyle (2:01.61) Placing third for the Indians were Moriarty in the 500 freestyle (6:01.46), Leslie in the 50 freestyle (29.13), and Earle in the 100 backstroke (2:10.48). The 200 medley relay group of Leslie, Mayo, Hicks, and Moriarty also took third with a time of 2:14.53.
