North Haven 18-U Fall Ball Sweeps Two Doubleheaders


The North Haven 18-U fall baseball team recently swept a pair of doubleheaders to add four more victories to its total. North Haven took two from the Dinger Ducks, before winning both ends of a doubleheader with the Diamond Zone to improve to 6-2-1 on the season.

On Sept. 22, North Haven swept a doubleheader from the Dinger Ducks by winning the first game 12-3 and taking the second game 7-6. In the first game, Cole Zalegowski singled and doubled with a run scored and two RBI, Colby Cusano had a single with a double, a walk, and a stolen base; and Gianni DiMartino had a single with a triple, a walk, two runs, and an RBI for North Haven. Danny Cannavaciolo singled, walked, scored a run, and drove in two runs; Ryan Sullivan had a single with two RBI, and Anthony Cretella had a single with a walk, two runs scored, and an RBI. Dan Meyers earned the win on the mound by allowing two unearned runs in three innings. Kevin Vinning gave up one run in two innings of relief, and Nick Rossi closed out the win by pitching two scoreless innings.

In the second game, North Haven took a 7-4 lead into the seventh and, despite giving up two runs in the inning, held on for the one-run victory to complete the sweep. Rossi hit two doubles, scored a run, and drove in a run; John Gontarek singled and tripled with a walk, a run scored, and two RBI; and Jay Ostrowski had a single, a walk, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Zalegowski tripled and scored a run, while Cannavaciolo had a double with an RBI in the win. Ben Sbabo and got the win by pitching three innings in which he allowed four unearned runs. Sullivan tossed three hitless innings of shutout relief, and Reid Kankel worked out of trouble in the seventh inning to finish off the win.

The following day, North Haven swept a double dip against the Diamond Zone, winning the first game 3-1 and posting a 7-0 shutout in the nightcap. Hunter Garthwait earned the win in the opener by pitching three innings in which he allowed one unearned run and struck out five. Gontarek pitched three scoreless innings, and Rossi tossed a scoreless seventh to get the save. Mike Anquillare had two singles, drew a walk, and stolen two bases; Cannavaciolo doubled, scored a run, and drew a walk; Owen Silk had two walks with a run scored and a stolen base, and Ostrowski singled with a walk and an RBI.

In the second game, Anthony Cincola pitched 4.2 scoreless innings for the win, and Meyers earned the save by throwing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. North Haven held a 1-0 lead, before scoring six runs in the seventh. Cannavaciolo tripled with a walk, two runs, and three RBI; Zalegowski had two singles with an RBI and a stolen base, and Sullivan added a pair of singles with a run scored. Gontarek and Rossi both had a single with a run and an RBI in the victory.
