Morgan Girls’ Soccer Stays Unbeaten with Two Shutouts; Football Takes 37-22 Loss at H-K

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team recorded two more victories last week to boost its mark to 3-0-2 on the season. The Huskies defeated Hale-Ray and Old Saybrook in last week’s action to stay undefeated on the season.

On Sept. 20, the Huskies hit the road for a match at Hale-Ray, where Morgan prevailed by a 7-0 score. The Huskies did the bulk of their scoring the in the first half, starting when senior Issy Ranaudo put one in the net in the 12th minute. Junior Natalie Novarro had the assist on the goal. Five minutes later, senior Chloe Bousquet scored on assists from freshman Taylor Maher and senior Jessie Flanagan. Junior Olivia Swan picked up a goal off a helper from freshman Jessie Flanagan only a minute after Bosquet’s goal. In the 22nd minute, senior captain Alyssa LeMay got in on the scoring party with a goal that was assisted by Carley Schmidt. A few minutes later, the Huskies took the 5-0 lead with another goal from Swan, this time assisted by Alena Curtis. Just before the end of the first half, Bousquet scored again off a helper from Clara Franzoni for a 6-0 advantage. In the second half, Rebecca Cockley scored in the 67th minute with an assist from Franzoni. Morgan took 26 shots on goal to Hale-Ray’s 3. Cockley played goal in the first half and had a save, after which Novarro made two saves playing net in the second half.

Two days later, the Huskies edged Old Saybrook 1-0 at the Indian River Complex. After a scoreless first half, Morgan got on the board in the 42nd minute thanks to Kylee Clifton’s goal on a LeMay assist. Morgan had 24 shots on goal and held Old Saybrook to 3 shots on goal.

Boys’ Soccer

The Huskies recorded their first tie of the season and also took their first loss of the year last week. Morgan’s record stands at 4-1-1 for the season.

On Sept. 17, Morgan hosted Hale-Ray at the Indian River Complex, where the two teams played to 1-1 stalemate. The Huskies scored the first goal of the game in the 31st minute on an assist from Jhonnyer Paida to Ford Pender for the finish. Morgan held a 1-0 lead at halftime. Hale-Ray tied the score in the second half, and neither team was able to gain an advantage over the other for the remainder of the game. Morgan outshot the Noises 21-3 and saw Nick Rubino make one save in the contest.

On Sept. 21, the Huskies took a 2-0 loss to Old Saybrook at the Indian River Complex. Both scores by Old Saybrook came in the second half of the game. Morgan outshot the Rams 26-8, but was unable to come away with the win.

Volleyball

The Morgan volleyball team was on the court for three matches last week, notching two wins to go with one loss for a record of 3-2 this fall.

On Sept. 17, the Huskies played a match at Hale-Ray and earned a 3-1 victory against the Noises. The next day, Morgan defeat Amistad via a 3-0 shutout at home. Then on Sept. 20, Morgan lost a 3-1 contest against East Hampton on the road.

Field Hockey

Morgan came away from last week’s matchups with a win and a loss to move to 2-1 on the season.

The Huskies hosted Westbrook at the Indian River Complex on Sept. 20 and dropped a 1-0 contest to the Knights. Two days later, Morgan headed to Somers and defeated the Tuskers by the final tally of 3-1.

Football

The Morgan football squad took a 37-22 defeat at Haddam-Killingworth on Sept. 21. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but H-K scored the first 23 points of the second half and went on to get the victory.

Morgan opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 16-yard pass from JP Nye to fellow senior Ryan Caldwell to go up 6-0. Haddam-Killingworth tied the score at 6-6 when the Cougars punched it over the goal line from the 1-yard line, before the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Morgan scored on another pass from inside the red zone, this time 10-yard connection from Nye to senior Mike Savage. Ryan Caldwell ran the ball in for a 2-point conversion, and the Huskies took a 14-6 lead. The Cougars tied the score with a rushing touchdown from 22 yards out and then converted their 2-point conversion, as well.

After halftime, H-K’s offense started to click as the Cougars scored two rushing touchdowns and a pair of 2-point conversions in the third quarter to make it 30-14. In the fourth quarter, H-K added another touchdown for a 37-14 advantage following the extra point. Morgan scored for the final time on Nye’s 30-yard touchdown pass to senior Deven Talarczyk to make it 37-22.

Nye passed for 256 yards and three touchdowns, and Ryan Caldwell had 117 receiving yards with a touchdown on seven catches. Talarczyk had six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Savage led the Huskies by making 15 tackles. Senior Zak Johnson had seven tackles for Morgan.

Coming up next for the Huskies (0-3) will be a home game versus North Branford (1-2) at the Peters Complex at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28.
