Yellowjackets’ Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight; Girls’ Soccer Rallies to Edge Lyman Hall

Volleyball

The East Haven volleyball team improved to 4-2 this season by posting victories over North Haven and Lauralton Hall last week. The Yellowjackets have now won four matches in a row.

East Haven defeated both of its SCC foes on the road in last week’s matchups. The Yellowjackets earned a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-18) win versus North Haven on Sept. 17 and then beat Lauralton 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20) on Sept. 20.

Against North Haven, Diana Kalman and Alannah Doheny both had eight kills, while Doheny added five digs in the victory. Tori Heaphy also had six digs to help East Haven prevail.

Facing Lauralton Hall, Kalman and Doheney once again recorded eight kills apiece with Doheny contributing six digs. Eliza Goldberg had four kills and seven blocks to aid the Yellowjackets.

Girls’ Soccer

East Haven defeated Lyman Hall by a final score of 4-3 on Sept. 20 to pick up its first victory of the season. It was a come-from-behind effort for the Easties, who scored three goals in the second half to earn the win. East Haven has a record of 1-0-2 through its first three games of the 2018 campaign.

After Lyman Hall jumped out to a 2-0 lead, senior Ali Szewc got East Haven on the board to cut the deficit in half prior to the halftime whistle. In the second half, the Yellowjackets received goals from freshman Emily Pycela, senior Jenna Pane, and freshman Emily Mazzucco to come away with the victory.

Boys’ Soccer

East Haven took three defeats last week and is now 0-5-1 for the season.

The Yellowjackets lost an 8-0 home contest against Cheshire on Sept. 18, dropped a 6-1 decision versus Lyman Hall on Sept. 20, and then took an 18-1 defeat versus Hamden on the road on Sept. 22.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The East Haven-Cross co-op squad had a meet in Shelton on Sept. 18 and gave a competitive effort in a 91-71 defeat versus the Gaels.

The Yellowjackets earned victories in five events at the meet, including two individual wins for Alora McCarroll. The sophomore won in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:33.07 and was victorious in the 100 breaststroke at 1:08.30. Freshman Norah Rome won the 500 freestyle at 5:26.41, while sophomore JJ Kim earned a victory in the 100 backstroke by clocking in at 1:08.30. The Easties’ 400 freestyle relay team of junior Selena Melendez, Rome, McConnell, and Kim finished first with a time of 4:07.39.
