North Haven Football Earns 34-21 Win Versus Cheshire; Girls’ Swimming Improves to 4-0

The North Haven football team hosted Cheshire for an SCC Tier 1 clash last week and claimed a 34-21 victory against the Rams at Vanacore Field on Sept. 21. With the win, the Indians improved their overall record to 3-0 and are now 2-0 in SCC Tier 1 play on the season.

Cheshire scored the first touchdown of the game and held a 7-0 lead over North Haven at the end of the first quarter. However, the Indians came back to score the next 34 points of the night to run away with the victory against the Rams, who dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in SCC Tier 1 this year.

Senior Shamus Meehan threw a touchdown pass to fellow senior Devan Brockamer and also rushed for a touchdown to help North Haven defeat Cheshire for the second year in a row. Seniors Noah Pastore and Nick Dodge added touchdown runs for the Indians, as did junior Max Augustine. Dodge ran 10 times for 109 yards to lead the North Haven ground attack.

Cheshire started off the game with a drive that culminated in a short touchdown run for an early 7-0 lead. North Haven responded by scoring three TDs in the second quarter and held a 19-7 advantage at halftime. First, the Indians went on a long drive that finished with Meehan finding Brockamer for a 26-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Sophomore Chase DiCarlo kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7. On North Haven’s next drive, Meehan broke loose for a 21-yard touchdown rush that gave the Indians a 13-7 advantage with seven minutes left in the first half. Following an interception by Brockamer, North Haven took advantage of its good field position and used a 1-yard TD run from Pastore to take a 19-7 lead into the locker room.

On the first drive of the second half, Dodge scampered for a 25-yard touchdown rush and then ran in the 2-point conversion to extend North Haven’s lead to 27-7 entering the fourth quarter. After North Haven recovered a Cheshire fumble, Augustine scored on a 1-yard TD rush to put the game away. DiCarlo’s extra point made the score 34-7 in favor of North Haven. Cheshire scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 34-21 final.

North Haven has a bye week in upcoming Week 4 play. The Indians will be back on the field when they hit road to face SCC Tier 2 squad Hillhouse at Bowen Field in New Haven at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Indians claimed two more victories last week to improve to 4-0 in 2018. North Haven recorded a home win over West Haven, before earning a win against Guilford on the road.

North Haven started off the week by defeating West Haven 97-81 at Gawrych Town Pool on Sept. 17. Sophomore Maddie Bergin recorded season-best times with her victories in the 200 individual medley (2:17.67) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.56) for North Haven. Junior Angela Gambardella won the 100 freestyle (55.90) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.18), swimming season-best times in both events. Sophomore Riley Jooss won the 500 freestyle with a season-best mark of 5:39.64 and also took second place in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 2:25.19. Junior Kiersten Winter swam season-best times for her victory in the 200 freestyle (2:09.20) and second-place showing in the 100 breaststroke (1:55.77). Also recording season-best times for the Indians were sophomore Molly Coyle in the 100 butterfly (1:12.06), junior Mackenzie Montesi in the 100 backstroke (1:09.96), freshman Noelle Carmody in the 100 backstroke (26.98), and freshman Taya Laborde for the 100 backstroke (1:10.28).

Four days later, the Indians notched an 84-69 road win versus Guilford at Soundview YMCA in Branford. Freshman Grace Finch took first in the 100 freestyle with a lifetime-best time of 1:06.93, Bergin won the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:59.69, and freshman Giulia Faulkner placed first in the 500 freestyle by swimming a season-best time of 5:51.90 for North Haven.

Volleyball

North Haven was victorious in two of its three matches last week to boost its record to 3-2 on the season. After taking a loss against East Haven, the Indians came back to post shutouts versus Lyman Hall and Hillhouse later in the week.

North Haven began its week by hosting East Haven for an SCC Oronoque Division matchup and lost a 3-0 contest to the Yellowjackets on Sept. 17. East Haven won the match behind scores of 25-20, 25-13, and 25-18. Junior Aubrey Reyes had five kills for the Indians in the loss.

The following day, the Indians headed to Wallingford to face Lyman Hall and came away with a 3-0 victory. North Haven swept the match with scores of 25-20, 25-11, and 25-10. Senior Giselle Zumerchik had three kills with three aces, while junior Melissa Siedemann contributed six kills for the Indians in the victory.

North Haven was back on the court on Sept. 20, when the Indians played a road match against divisional opponent Hillhouse. The Indians blanked the Academics 3-0 in New Haven to earn their first win in Oronoque Division play this year.

Girls’ Soccer

North Haven picked up its first win with Head Coach Jeff Knuth when the Indians posted a 1-0 home victory over Foran last week. The Indians also took a defeat to Cheshire and earned a tie with Hamden for a record of 1-4-1 this season.

The Indians squared off against Foran at North Haven Middle School on Sept. 17 and prevailed by a 1-0 final. Senior Annie Uyeki scored the only goal of the game in the first half to help Coach Knuth secure his first victory as the team’s head coach.

On Sept. 20, the Indians were at Cheshire for first game in SCC Quinnipiac Division play and dropped a 5-2 decision. Senior Kelly Fresher and junior Julia Raposo scored goals for the Indians, while freshman Ada Forbes contributed an assist.

Two days later, North Haven hosted Hamden and battled the Green Dragons to a 2-2 draw in another Quinnipiac Division game.

Boys’ Soccer

The Indians took a pair of defeats last week by losing games against Hand, Xavier, and Cross. North Haven now has a record of 2-3 on the year.

On Sept. 17, the Indians hosted Hand for their SCC Housatonic Division opener and took an 8-1 loss at North Haven Middle School.

Three days later, North Haven had a home game with Xavier were edged by the Falcons by the final score of 2-1. Senior AJ Fraschilla scored on an assist from sophomore Eduardo Cienfuegos to give the Indians a 1-0 lead at halftime. However, Xavier came back by scoring a pair of goals in the second half and went on to the 2-1 victory.

On Sept. 22, North Haven dropped a 2-1 decision to Cross in a Housatonic Division contest in New Haven.

Boys’ Cross Country

North Haven took two out of three in a quad-meet at Hamden Town Park on Sept. 17 to improve its record to 5-1 this fall. The Indians earned a 15-50 victory versus East Haven (15-50), defeated Hamden by the final score of 25-30, and took a 23-36 loss against Notre Dame-West Haven at the meet.

Senior Jack Opramolla recorded a time of 18 minutes and 32 seconds to finish in fourth place for North Haven. Senior Jackson Frank took seventh place with a time of 19:14, while freshman Jake Hines timed in at 19:16 to finish in eighth place.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Indians had a quad-meet in Hamden last week and posted a victory versus East Haven at the meet. North Haven defeated East Haven (15-50) and also took losses against Hamden (17-46) and Sacred Heart Academy (19-43) at Hamden Town Park on Sept. 17.

Junior Reagan Forbes recorded a mark of 22 minutes and 46 seconds to finish in sixth place for the Indians, who now have a record of 4-2 on the year.

Field Hockey

North Haven dropped contests on the road against Bethel and Sheehan last week to move to 0-4 on the season.

On Sept. 17, the Indians were on the road for a non-conference matchup versus Bethel and took a 1-0 defeat.

Then on Sept. 21, North Haven faced fellow Southern Connecticut Conference opponent Sheehan and took a 2-1 overtime loss in Wallingford.
