Field Hockey

The Guilford field hockey team continued its strong start to the 2018 season by recording two more victories in shutout fashion last week. The Indians, who have a record of 4-1 on the year, have outscored their opponents by an 18-0 differential during that four-game stretch.

Guilford started off last week by claiming a 2-0 road win against Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden on Sept. 17. The Indians scored both goals of the game in the first half. Three days later, Guilford was back on the road to face Branford and netted a 3-0 win versus the Hornets. The Indians swept this match with scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-15. Despite the loss, Head Coach Anthony Avallone said there were some bright spots for Guilford, including the play of its offensive line, plus some hard running by Charles Schioppo.

“We knew the task was large. We just thought we could do a better job containing them,” Avallone said. “In the future, we need to figure out better ways to simply wrap and tackle. Overall, we did some things well and cleaned up a few mistakes from the previous week. We just have to find ways to improve on the basics.”

This week, Guilford will hit the road to face SCC Tier 1 school Shelton for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Sept. 28.
