Branford Girls’ Swimming Earns Win Versus Guilford; Volleyball, Girls’ Soccer Get First Victories

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Branford girls’ swimming and diving team split a pair of matchups last week to move to 2-2-1 on the year. Branford earned a win against Guilford and then took a loss versus Law in last week’s meets.

In its first meet of the week, Branford earned a 93-85 home win over Guilford at the Walsh Intermediate School pool on Sept. 18. Sophomore Melissa Juliano took first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:12.23 and also finished first in the 100 backstroke at 1:07.65 for Branford. Junior Gabrielle Gillis placed first in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 27.0 seconds to go with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 59.48 seconds. Freshman Erika Barone finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:10.71), while sophomore Katherine Parsell took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.52) for Branford in the victory. The Hornets’ 200 medley relay of sophomore Nicola Colossale, Barone, Gillis, and junior Cordelia Keberle came in first place by timing in at 2:08.07.

On Sept. 21, the Hornets traveled to Milford to face Law and took a 99-84 defeat. Barone won the 100 backstroke (1:06.70), and Keberle took first in the 100 butterfly (1:08.25) for the Hornets. Branford’s 200 freestyle relay of junior Adrienne Dillon, freshman Rory Jacobson, Keberle, and Juliano posted a time of 1:54.49 to finish in first place. Branford’s 400 freestyle relay of freshman Juliana Torello, sophomore Delaney Cotter, junior Elizabeth Bartlett, and senior Iliana Badillo finished first with a time of 5:22.35.

Volleyball

Branford captured a 3-1 victory at Mercy last week to put its first win of the season in the books. The Hornets also took a loss against Guilford for an overall record of 1-5 this year.

On Sept. 17, the Hornets played a match at Mercy and came away with a 3-1 win in an SCC Hammonasset Division contest. Branford won the match behind final scores of 25-13, 19-25, 25-15, and 25-21. Junior Diana Karosas had 16 digs with 10 digs and seven aces, senior Taryn Broughal recorded five kills, five aces, and three blocks; and sophomore Alina Catania had 38 assists in the win. Branford improved to 1-1 in divisional play with this victory.

On Sept, 21, Branford hosted Guilford and dropped a 3-0 decision behind scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-15.

Boys’ Soccer

The Hornets notched a win against Law and then tied both Cheshire and Lyman Hall in last week’s action. Branford is 3-0-2 overall on the season.

Branford started off last week by playing a game at Law and claimed a 1-0 victory on Sept. 17. Three days later, the Hornets hosted Cheshire for an SCC Oronoque Division matchup and the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie. On Sept. 22, Branford had a game at Lyman Hall and played the Trojans to a 4-4 draw to move to 1-0-2 in divisional play this year.

Girls’ Soccer

Branford picked up its first win of the year when the Hornets claimed a 4-0 victory at Cross on Sept. 20. The Hornets also dropped contests against Shelton and Lauralton Hall and now have a record of 1-2-1 this fall.

On Sept. 17, Branford took a 3-1 home loss against Shelton in an SCC Housatonic Division contest. Sophomore Alayna Boileau scored a goal for the Hornets in the game.

Then on Sept. 20, the Hornets faced Cross in another Housatonic matchup and prevailed 4-0 at Rice Field in New Haven. Boileau, junior Melanie Sachs, senior Melissa Beatty, and junior Rose Lockery all found the back of the net to lift Branford to the victory.

Two days later, Branford hosted Lauralton Hall for a divisional duel and lost by the final score of 2-0.

Field Hockey

Branford played one game last week when the Hornets hosted non-conference opponent Stonington on Sept. 22. The Hornets played Stonington to a 0-0 tie to put their mark at 3-1-1 for the season.

Junior Gianna Messina made two saves in goal to help Branford pick up a point with its tie versus Stonington. Head Coach Pete Frye said that his team received great contributions from seniors Liante Claude and Carly Shea, juniors Karly King, Molly Zaffino, and Claire Bickel; and sophomore Jocelyn Smestad in the game.

Girls’ Cross Country

The Hornets hosted Lauralton Hall for a dual-meet at the Supply Pond on Sept. 17 and notched a 22-33 victory over the Crusaders. Branford improved its record to 2-1 on the season with the victory.

Isabella Finta recorded a time of 23 minutes and 14 seconds to take first place for Branford at the meet. Teammate Kacey Gilman came in second place at 23:36, while Isla Lionetti ran a time of 23:41 to finish in third place for the Hornets.

Boys’ Cross Country

Branford took a 15-48 home loss against Fairfield Prep at the Supply Pond on Sept. 17. The Hornets now have a record of 1-2 on the year.
