Huskies’ Girls’ Soccer, Field Hockey Get First Wins of the Year

Girls’ Soccer

The Morgan girls’ soccer team picked up its first win of the year to go along with a tie in last week’s action. The Huskies now have a record of 1-0-2 on the season.

On Sept. 12, the Huskies hosted Coginchaug and claimed a 3-0 victory. Morgan scored all three of its goals in the first half and then held off the Blue Devils the rest of the way behind a shutout from goalkeeper Rebecca Cockley. Issy Ranaudo scored in the just four minutes into the game off an assist from Alyssa LeMay. Ranaudo scored again in the 22nd minute on a pass from Maura Kelly. Carley Schmidt scored Morgan’s last goal in the 39th minute.

Three days later, the Huskies and East Hampton played to a 1-1 tie at the Indian River Complex. Morgan got on the board first at the 29:50 mark, when LeMay scored off a helper from Schmidt. East Hampton tied the game with just less than five minutes left for the 1-1 final. Cockley made five saves in net.

Football

The Huskies matched up against Valley Regional-Old Lyme last week and lost a 21-6 contest at the Peters Complex on Sept. 14.

Valley scored touchdowns in both the first and second quarters to hold a 14-0 lead entering the fourth quarter. Hunter Kyhn scored on 3-yard run for Morgan to bring the score to 14-6 in the fourth. However, the Warriors came back with a long touchdown run to make it a two-score game and went on to the win.

Quarterback JP Nye threw for 260 yards and picked up 46 yards on the ground for Morgan. Michael Savage ran for 41 yards, and Kyhn rushed for 24 yards. Ryan Caldwell had 11 catches for 129 yards, while Kyhn added three catches for 49 yards.

On defense, Caldwell recorded a sack and had three tackles, including one for a loss. Matt Luchuk made three tackles with two for a loss.

This week, Head Coach Peter Nye’s squad heads has a road game against Haddam-Killingworth (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Field Hockey

The Huskies began their season by picking up a win against Haddam-Killingworth last week. Morgan hosted the Cougars at the Indian River Complex on Sept. 14 and netted a 3-2 victory to start the year on a positive note.

Volleyball

Morgan lost a 3-0 home contest against Haddam-Killingworth in its match of the week to even its record at 1-1. The Cougars took the match behind scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-16.

Sarah Kuever had 15 assists, five digs, and two blocks, while Mackenzie Anderson added seven kills, four digs, and two aces for the Huskies. Charlotte Davenport had six aces and five kills in the loss.
