The North Haven football team improved to 2-0 in the 2018 season by posting a convincing 41-20 home victory against non-conference opponent Masuk at Vanacore Field on Sept. 14. Senior Devan Brockamer had two long touchdown runs for the Indians, who saw fellow seniors Nick Dodge and Albert Hooks both return interceptions for scores. Hooks added a touchdown run for North Haven, while senior Shamus Meehan threw a TD to junior Noah Perillie in the win.

The game was played as part of the Connecticut High School Football Alliance, which is a two-week series of crossover games between teams from the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC), the Eastern Connecticut Conference (ECC), and the South-West Conference (SWC). Representing the SCC, North Haven scored the first 41 points of the game and cruised to victory against SWC opponent Masuk, which dropped to 0-2 with the loss. The Indians will play a road game against another SWC school, Brookfield, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

“It was another example of a great team victory. I thought we made improvements across the board in every part of the game from last week to this week, and that was very important, because that was our goal,” said Head Coach Anthony Sagnella, whose team had claimed a 20-19 victory at West Haven in Week 1 for its first win against the Blue Devils in program history. “Coming off the West Haven game, we wanted to take the momentum of that victory and have it translate to a great week of practice and a great week of preparation, which it did. The kids responded, and I saw improvements across the board.”

North Haven scored two TDs in the first quarter and three more in the second to establish a 34-0 halftime command against Masuk. On the Indians’ second series of the night, Brockamer broke off a 49-yard touchdown run to put North Haven on the board with 3:17 left in the opening frame. Sophomore Chase DiCarlo kicked the extra point and the Indians were up 7-0. Just seven seconds later, Dodge intercepted Masuk’s quarterback and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-0. Dodge had two interceptions in the game.

Early in the second quarter, Brockamer scored on a 50-yard touchdown run as North Haven extended its lead to 20-0. One minute after that, Hooks intercepted the Panthers’ QB and took it back 38 yards for a pick-six as the Indians increased the lead to 27-0. With 3:27 to go before halftime, Hooks ran in a 20-yard touchdown and DiCarlo followed with the extra point to give North Haven a 34-0 advantage.

On North Haven’s first drive of the second half, Meehan completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Perillie on his only pass of the game. DiCarlo booted his fifth extra point and the Indians were in control with a 41-0 cushion. Masuk scored all three of its touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 41-20 final.

Brockamer gained 111 yards and scored two TDs on just five carries for North Haven. Senior Noah Pastore aided the ground game with 11 carries for 42 yards.

On defense, senior Kevin Anasoulis recorded two sacks, while juniors Josh Blumenthal, Kyle Maruca, and Luke Maruca each had one sack for the Indians. Senior Lou Mineri made eight tackles to lead North Haven in that department.

North Haven will next host Cheshire (0-2) for an SCC Tier 1 contest at Vanacore Field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21
