The Guilford football team opened up its 2018 campaign by claiming a big road win last week. Guilford traveled to Waterford for a non-conference contest and came away with a 28-14 triumph on Sept. 14.
Charles Schioppo had a huge night on the ground by rushing for 204 yards on 33 carries for the Indians. Ethan Vashel completed six passes on 14 attempts for 103 yards and a touchdown. The quarterback also ran for 29 yards and a score on four carries. Guilford scored on a 20-yard scamper by Charles Wolcott, a 15-yard run by Tyler Filley, a 10-yard touchdown reception by Filley from Vashel, and a 20-yard quarterback keeper by Vashel in the win.
“The defense played well and was led by outstanding linebacker play and strong defensive line play, as well. On offense, we were led by very strong offensive line play and some very strong running by Charles Schioppo,” said Head Coach Anthony Avallone. “Ethan Vashel played great, as well, and made some huge third down conversions, while the receiving corps of Miles Gabriel, Tyler Filley, and Joe Palmer [2 catches, 40 yards] made some huge catches in some timely spots. Although I thought we could have played better, I realize where we currently are as a team and the development we need to make in order to develop as a team. I was pleased with the effort, and I thought the boys responded to some adversity well.”
The Indians (1-0) will face fellow SCC Tier 3 opponent Sheehan (2-0) for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
Girls’ Cross Country
The Indians started their dual-meet season with a quad-meet sweep for an early mark of 3-0.
Guilford took on Foran, East Haven, and Cross at Eisenhower Park in Milford on Sept. 12. The Indians defeated Cross (22-37), East Haven (15-50), and the host Lions (15-47) at the meet. Guilford is 1-0 in SCC Hammonasset Division action following the Foran victory.
Last fall, Head Coach Jim Ford’s team went undefeated for the regular season, took first place at the SCC Championship, and then raced to a second-place finish at states. The Indians finished at 13-0 for the dual-meet season with a record of 4-0 in the SCC Hammonasset Division, claiming their 11th Hammonasset Division title since 2004. Guilford then took first place at the SCC Championship by tallying a low total of 40 points to easily outdistance runner-up Cheshire (76 points) to capture the program’s 14th conference title and first since 2012.
Volleyball
The Indians recorded two sweeps last week to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCC Oronoque Division.
Guilford swept aside Hamden 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) on Sept. 12. Leading the way for the Indians were Emma Appleman (9 kills, 9 assists, 7 digs, 3 aces), Hunter Halbower (9 kills), and Juliet Young (10 digs, 1 ace).
The Indians then bested divisional adversary North Haven by a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-16) score on Sept. 14. Appleman posted 12 kills, 15 digs, and two aces; Young added 10 digs, and Eva Ott Hill handed out 16 assists to go with six digs.
Field Hockey
Seven was a lucky number for the Indians last week as they improved to 2-1 on the year behind a pair of 7-0 triumphs.
Guilford picked up win No. 1 of 2018 with a 7-0 blanking of Lyman Hall on Sept. 11 and then shut out Mercy by that same final on Sept. 14. Goalie Eve Young recorded shutouts in both wins for the Indians. On the week, Ella Stanley scored four goals for Guilford, while Celia Mariconda and Hannah Tillier both scored two goals. Mia Tilton, Emily Torre, Jamie Neleber, Kelsi Putnam, Nicole Auger, and Ava Bucci each chipped in with a goal to help Guilford win both of its contests.
Boys’ Soccer
Guilford is now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCC Quinnipiac Division after being on opposite sides of 3-0 finals this past week.
The Indians were shut out by Shelton, 3-0, on Sept. 11. Guilford promptly bounced back by blanking divisional foe Foran by that same 3-0 score on Sept. 14.
Girls’ Soccer
The Indians are 0-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the SCC Hammonasset Division after taking a loss and playing to a tie in two matchups last week.
On Sept. 11, Guilford lost a 1-0 decision versus Mercy. Facing West Haven in their SCC Hammonasset Division opener, the Indians played the Blue Devils to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 15.
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
Guilford started its year by taking a couple of defeats, but still showed plenty of promise in the pool last week. Jen Amasino returns as Guilford’s head coach to guide the Indians in their second year as a varsity program.
The Indians started their campaign with an 88-80 home loss to Sheehan at the Branford Soundview YMCA on Sept. 11. Alex Mayo won the 200 individual medley (2:20.88) and 100 butterfly (1:04.77), while Haley Moriarty took first place the 100 freestyle (1:02.19) for Guilford. The Indians’ 200 freestyle relay of Moriarty, Mayo, Liz Hicks, and Brynn Leslie was finished in first place at 1:55.03. The 200 medley relay Moriarty, Julia Earle, Mayo, and Leslie came in second place. (2:12.07). Leslie placed second for both the 50 freestyle (28.01) and the 500 freestyle (6:15.20) with Hicks placing third in the 500 free (6:30.84). Earle was the runner-up for the 100 backstroke (1:18.76), Chloe Shoff took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:30.53), plus Moriarty was third in the 200 freestyle (2:15.28).
On Sept, 14, Guilford lost to Foran by an 87-78 score in another home meet. Mayo won the 200 freestyle (2:04.40) with Hicks finishing third (2:22.91) for the Indians. Mayo also took first place in the 100 free (56.66), while Moriarty finished first for the 50 free (27.93) and 100 backstroke (1:12.90). The 200 freestyle relay of Mayo, Moriarty, Leslie, and Hicks notched a first-place finish with a time of 1:54.17. Leslie place second for the 500 free (6:03.95), Moriarty came in third for the 200 IM (2:40.12), and the 200 medley relay of Earle, Shoff, Audrey Rowan, and Leslie finished third (2:28.28).
