North Haven Fall Ball Starts a New Season


The North Haven 18-U fall baseball team stands with a record of 1-2-1 in the early goings of its 2018 season. North Haven started off its year by splitting a pair of games when it took a 3-2 defeat against the Connecticut Hurricanes and then came back to post a 4-2 win over DBI on Sept. 8. One week later, North Haven squared off with Cheshire for a doubleheader and came away with a loss and a tie. North Haven took a 6-4 defeat in the first game and played Cheshire to a 2-2 stalemate in the nightcap.

In the game against the Hurricanes, Dan Meyers pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief for North Haven, after which Ryan Sullivan threw one scoreless inning. Hunter Garthwait had an RBI single, and Colby Cusano drove home a run on a sacrifice fly. Nick Rossi and Mason Balmer scored North Haven’s runs in the loss.

For the win over DBI, Ben Sbabo pitched a complete game four-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead North Haven to the 4-2 victory. Dave Christoforo had a single with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base; John Gontarek hit two singles and drove home a run, and Anthony Cretella doubled, scored two runs, and had an RBI. Sullivan hit an RBI single, Garthwait hit a double, and newcomer Reid Kankel doubled, walked, and scored a run in the win.

North Haven held a 4-2 lead in the first game of the Cheshire doubleheader, before Cheshire scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth for the 6-4 victory. Kevin Vinning pitched 1.2 scoreless inning of relief and drew two walks at the plate for North Haven. Gontarek had a double with a run scored and an RBI.

North Haven trailed 2-0 in the second game, but rallied for two runs in the third inning to tie it up. The game stayed knotted at 2 through nine innings when it was ultimately ruled a tie. Sbabo got the start on the mound and allowed two runs (1 earned), while scattering seven hits through 4.2 innings. Sullivan tossed three scoreless innings for North Haven. Gontarek retired two batters in the eighth and Rossi pitched a scoreless ninth. Christoforo had two singles with a walk, Cole Zalegowski singled and doubled with a run scored, Danny Cannavaciolo singled and scored a run, and Cusano walked and drove in a run.
