Boys’ Soccer

The Old Saybrook boys’ soccer squad secured a 4-1 victory over Portland in its 2018 opener on Sept. 7. Head Coach Sam Barnes’s team is back in action following an outstanding 2017 campaign that saw the Rams turn in an undefeated regular season, before reaching the semifinals of both the Shoreline Conference and Class S State tournaments.

Against Portland, senior Paddy Ryan put on a display in the second half, when he recorded a hat trick on three unassisted goals within a 15-minute timespan. Junior Shon Ryan had scored the first goal of the game off an assist from Ryan. The Rams outshot Portland 25-11 in the win. Old Saybrook’s sophomore keeper Matthew Rothman made five saves.

After a scoreless first half, Ryan netted the first goal of the game at the 50:46 mark off of a Ryan assist. A little less than three minutes later, Ryan got the fireworks going by scoring his first goal. Ryan scored his second goal five minutes after that, and his final goal came at the 68:54 mark. Portland scored its lone goal at the 79:51 mark.

Girls’ Soccer

Old Saybrook lost its first game of the season by taking a 3-0 road defeat at Cromwell on Sept. 8. The Rams recorded five wins in the 2017 campaign.

Field Hockey

The Rams lost a 3-1 contest against Branford on the road to begin their year on Sept. 8. Last season, Old Saybrook sneaked into the Class S State Tournament and won its qualifying round contest against Northwest Catholic, before losing to No. 1 seed North Branford in the first round.
