East Haven Junior Legion Playing in States This Week; Seniors Finish Season

Junior Legion Baseball

The East Haven Junior Legion baseball team finished its regular season with a record of 14-7 to place third in the Zone 2 standings. The 89ers will open the State Tournament by hosting Wilton on Monday, July 23.

On July 18, East Haven took a 3-2 loss to Hamden. Gianni Mumford struck out six in no-decision. AJ Maggiore hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning.

The next day, the 89ers rebounded with a 7-6 victory against Hamden. Maggiore earned the win in relief for the 89ers. East Haven had a big fifth inning as Robbie Garcia, Freddie Mascola, and Maggiore all walked and were driven in on timely base knocks by Mike O’Connor, Giro Esposito, and Mumford. East Haven scored five runs that inning and added another run in the sixth to even the score at 6-6. In the seventh, East Haven scored the game-winning run when Danny Flores drilled a single down the third-base line to score Mumford, who had doubled.

On July 21, East Haven won both games of a doubleheader against West Haven, prevailing 12-2 and 13-7. Matt Lisko earned the win in the first game as he allowed two runs over five innings. East Haven scored 10 runs in the fifth to break the game open. Marquardt had a two-RBI double early in the inning. Later in the frame, Mumford, Flores, John Ruggiero, and Marquardt all drove in runs for East Haven.

In the second game, Maggiore, Ruggiero, Marquardt, and Mascola combined for the victory on the hill. Streeto, Esposito, Marquardt, and Mascola each scored a run in the first inning, and then Marquardt drove in Esposito with a single in the second. Flores had two RBI in the game, while Ruggiero and Lisko both scored a run.

Senior Legion Baseball

The 89ers finished their summer with a record of 7-14 after beating West Haven and then losing to Hamden and Orange last week.

On July 16, East Haven notched a 7-1 victory over West Haven. Fred Mascola earned the win in relief for the 89ers, who took the lead on Sal Buffone’s squeeze bunt. Tristan Punzo had two hits and a RBI, Gabe Longley had a hit and a RBI, and Anthony Buffone had a double and two RBI.

East Haven took a 13-5 defeat versus Hamden on July 18. Mark Smith had four hits, including a triple, and drove in a run. Zimmerman had a triple, Matt Lisko and Frank Longley, both added hits, while Gabe Longley had two hits and a sacrifice fly.

In their final game of the year, the 89ers lost to Orange by a 6-1 count on July 19. Frank Longley had a hit and an and RBI for East Haven, which saw Anthony Buffone and Lisko both get a hit.
