The Clinton Huskies 18-U AAU baseball team played a doubleheader against the Connecticut Hurricanes in Greater New Haven Baseball League action last week. Clinton squared off against the Hurricanes at the Indian River Complex on July 8 and split the two games to move to 10-7 on the season.

Both matchups were low-scoring games and, in the first game, the Huskies triumphed by a score of 3-2 in walk-off fashion. John Urban threw a complete game for the Huskies, giving up only a pair of runs in the win.

Clinton got the scoring started in the first inning with a single from AJ Fritz, who promptly stole second base, and was then driven in on a single from Nick Caprio. The Huskies scored again in the fifth when Ray Seward walked and then scored on a base hit by Mike Callahan.

The Hurricanes tied it up in the sixth inning to set up some late-game theatrics from the Huskies in the seventh. Trevor Follo got a base hit to start things off for Clinton. Caprio walked and then Follo made it to third on a wild pitch. Russ Green followed by dropping down a squeeze bunt to bring home Seward with the game-winning run for a 3-2, walk-off victory.

The Huskies dropped a 2-1 contest against the Hurricanes in the second game of the doubleheader. Drew Walton pitched five scoreless innings, before giving up two runs in the sixth. The Huskies had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to base hits from Anthony Mongillo, Mike Menacho, and Green.

Head Coach Willie Fritz felt most confident about the way his team pitched last week, even though he was hoping for the sweep.

“We stole a win in the first game, but we didn’t capitalize in the second game,” said Fritz. “We’ve been getting great pitching. I can’t say enough about the pitching.”
