The East Haven Junior American Legion baseball squad improved its record to 6-1 following a 10-3 victory over Zone 2 opponent West Haven on June 25. Following the win, the 89ers were in second place in the Zone 2 standings, trailing Hamden (8-1) by just one game.

John Crisci took the mound for his first start of the season and pitched a complete game when East Haven routed West Haven last week. Crisci allowed just three hits, no earned runs, and struck out six batters.

East Haven struck first in the bottom of the second inning as Jake Marquardt led off with a single and was driven home by Freddie Mascola’s single. After Thomas Sabin got on, Robbie Garcia knocked in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single.

The 89ers’ bats continued to stay hot in the third inning. After East Haven loaded the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch, Giro Esposito cracked a two-RBI single and then Sabin drove in another run. In the fourth inning, Danny Flores reached base on an error and later came around to score on a throwing error on a ball hit by John Ruggiero.

The 89ers tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory. Mike Streeto led off with a single, before Ruggiero and Mike O’Connor drew walks to load up the bases. Esposito knocked in Streeto with a single, and then Mason Williams worked an eight-pitch at-bat that culminated with him driving in two runs with a base hit up the middle.
