The Branford Senior American Legion baseball team hosted Zone 2 rival North Haven on June 27. Post 83 earned a 3-2 win at Branford High School to improve to 6-0 in zone play and remain the only undefeated team in Zone 2 this season.

Zane Kmietek pitched six innings to get the win versus North Haven and improve to 3-0 for the year. Alphonse Suppa threw a scoreless seventh inning to record the save. Branford had just one hit going into the bottom of sixth inning, but then pushed two runs across the plate to take a 3-2 lead. Zach Withington and Suppa singled to start the frame, after which Carson Mendoza got aboard on a bunt single. Jake McPartland drove in the tying run on a fielder’s choice, and then Jake Bodner reached on an error on a play that saw Post 83 plate the go-ahead run.

“Big win for our team coming from behind in a game where everything wasn’t clicking,” said Branford Head Coach Kyle Heins. “But coming from behind shows that our team has what it takes to make a run at this.”

Post 83 dropped a pair of contests against North Haven last week to put their record at 4-4 in Zone 2 play this summer.

On June 26, Branford took a 9-4 home loss against North Haven. Dylan Giordano led off the third inning with a single and later scored on a groundout by Glenn Iacovetti. Then in the sixth, Iacovetti and Declan Ross started the frame with consecutive singles and both scored on a double by Enrique Diaz. Diaz later scored on a wild pitch.

The next day, Post 83 lost to North Haven by an 11-0 final on the road. Diaz and Jack Van Gelder recorded Branford’s only two hits in the defeat.
