North Haven Senior Legion Caps Off Three-Game Sweep of East Haven; Juniors Get a Win Against Hamden

Senior Legion Baseball

The North Haven Senior American Legion baseball team recently split a pair of Zone 2 contests to move to 3-1 in zone play on the season. Post 76 recorded a 6-5 win against East Haven and then took a 5-2 defeat versus Hamden. Post 76 also claimed two non-zone victories last week to improve to 7-1 overall.

North Haven hosted East Haven on June 17 and edged out the 89ers by a 6-5 final to complete a sweep of the three-game series. Post 76 scored two runs in the first inning, four more in the second, and then held off a charge by East Haven to come away with the victory. Brendan Clark had two singles with a walk, two RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases to lead North Haven’s offense. Peyton Farina singled, doubled, walked, scored two runs, and stole a base. Steven Erbe drew three walks, Christian Somma walked twice and scored a run, and Gianni DeMartino had a single with a run scored. Griffin Bottomley pitched 3.2 innings and allowed just one unearned run to get the win for the Indians. Zach Pincince threw 2.1 innings, and Luca Lawrence notched the save by pitching the seventh.

Then on June 20, North Haven dropped a 5-2 decision at Hamden in another Zone 2 contest. Hamden plated three runs in the first inning and went on to get the victory. Somma singled and scored on a double by Farina to cut it to 3-1 in the third inning. With North Haven trailing 5-1 in the fifth, Andrew Laudano walked and later scored a run for Post 76. Farina also singled and stole a base to go with his RBI double. Nate Zalegowski tossed two scoreless innings of relief to keep North Haven in the game.

On June 22, North Haven played the first of a few non-zone games at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine in Standish, Maine. Post 76 started off the road trip by notching a 6-1 win over West Hartford.

The following day, North Haven earned a 15-2 win versus Spinners Prospect of Lowell, Massachusetts. Clark got the win by throwing two scoreless innings, in addition to going 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and four RBI at the plate. Danny Cannavaciolo was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base; while Pincince went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBI. DeMartino went 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs, and an RBI; Hunter Garthwait singled, drew a walk, scored a run, and drove in two runs; and Kevin Lucey had a single with two walks, a run, and an RBI for North Haven. Zalegowski had a single with two runs and an RBI, and Dave Chrisotoforo added a single with an RBI.

Junior Legion Baseball

The Post 76 Juniors recently squared off against Hamden for a three-game series and lost two of three to stand at 4-2 in zone play. North Haven lost a 4-3 game to Hamden on June 19, after which the two clubs split a doubleheader the following day. Post 76 went on to take three-zone losses to move to 4-10 overall.

North Haven fell into a 4-0 hole by the second inning when it played at Hamden in the opener of the three game-set. Post 76 rallied for three runs in the third, but was unable to get the tying run across. Gianni DeMartino and John Gontarek both had a pair of singles; Colby Cusano singled, scored a run, and drove home a run; and Hunter Garthwait hit a two-run triple for North Haven, which saw Dan Meyers pitch a complete game in the 4-3 defeat.

The following day, North Haven split a home doubleheader with Hamden by winning the opener 10-7 and losing the nightcap 5-1. In the first game, North Haven was down 7-4, before scoring six runs in the sixth inning to get the victory. Anthony Cretella had a single with a double and three RBI, Ryan Sullivan had two singles with a run scored, and Cusano singled, walked, scored two runs, and drove in two runs for Post 76. Gontarek drew three walks, scored two runs, and drove home a run, Jaden Luedee singled with two RBI, DeMartino had a single and an RBI, and Owen Silk had a single with a walk and two runs scored. Hunter Garthwait pitched three innings of relief to get the win, and Silk threw a scoreless seventh to lock down the save in the 10-7 victory.

For the second game, Hamden scored three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to get the 5-1 win. Cretella had a pair of singles, Gontarek singled and scored a run, and DeMartino walked twice and drove home a run.

On June 22, Post 76 played two non-zone games at Baseball Heaven in Long Island, New York. North Haven took an 8-0 loss to the Brooklyn Bombers and then dropped a 7-0 decision versus the Long Island Titans. The next day, North Haven lost to the New York Nine by a 10-2 score in another non-zone contest.

Prep Legion Baseball

North Haven recently lost three games in Zone A action and also split a pair of non-zone contests to move to 3-6 in the zone and 4-7 overall this year. On June 17, North Haven took an 11-5 loss at Wallingford and then claimed a 5-2 win at non-zone opponent Middletown later that day. Two days later, Post 76 took a 12-7 home loss against Wallingford. The day after that, North Haven dropped a 3-0 decision in North Haven. On June 23, Post 76 dropped a 3-0 decision in Middletown.
