Henderson Wins CIAC Steeplechase; Two Rams Compete in Heptathlon

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Shane Henderson claimed first place at the CIAC 3,000-Meter Steeplechase when the junior competed on behalf of the Old Saybrook boys’ outdoor track team in the event last week. Henderson, a junior, posted a time of 9 minutes and 48.76 seconds to take the gold at Manchester High School on June 13. Henderson’s time was nearly seven seconds better than runner-up Eddie Nicholas of Nonnewaug, who crossed the finish line with a mark of 9:55.46. Henderson ultimately bested a field of 27 competitors to take first place in the steeplechase and cap off his junior season on a high note.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Senior Annea Thaci and sophomore Autumn Szucs represented Old Saybrook at the CIAC Heptathlon at Manchester High School on June 12. Thaci earned a total score of 3,035 and placed 21st among a field of 57 competitors, while Szucs came in 35th place with a score of 1,599 points.

In the individual events, Thaci took fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles by finishing in 16.59 seconds. In the javelin, Thaci threw for a distance of 79 feet-6 inches and earned seventh place. For the long jump, she placed ninth with a distance of 15-6. Thaci tied for 17th place by reaching 4 feet-6.25 inches. Thaci also finished 31st in the 800 (3:22.57) and came in 32nd place in the 200 (29.82) at the heptathlon.

Szucs tied with Thaci for 17th place in the high jump with a height of 4-6.25. She also placed 18th in the long jump (24-8.25), 34th in the 200 (29.87), 40th for the 100 hurdles (20.0), and 41st in the shot put (21-11) for Old Saybrook.

Also on June 12, Rams’ senior Ingrid Boland competed in the CIAC 2,000-Meter Steeplechase for girls’ outdoor track. Boland earned 43rd place out of a field of 65 runners by recording a time of 8:55.19.
