East Haven 8th-Grade Girls’ Hoops Wins Tourney in Cape Cod


The East Haven 8th-grade girls’ hoops squad took the title at a tourney in Cape Cod by defeating host Barnstable, Massachusetts in the championship contest. The East Haven 8th-grade girls’ travel basketball team won the championship at a tournament in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Most of the team’s athletes have been playing together since the 4th grade, and they decided to play in one last tournament together in Cape Cod. East Haven won the title by defeating host Barnstable, Massachusetts in the championship game. The team’s athletes will now be going on to play basketball at various high schools.

East Haven entered the title game as the underdog and was at a size disadvantage while facing Barnstable on the opposition’s home floor. However, East Haven used its speed to its advantage and came away with the victory in a physical contest.

Previously, East Haven had earned victories against three Massachusetts teams to advance to the final of the tournament. East Haven defeated Wareham (37-13), Bourne (43-27), and Nantucket (35-14) to punch its ticket to the championship game.

East Haven’s athletes are Josie Cancro, Mercedes Cestaro, Josie Ferrucci, Tanner Punzo, Emily Pycela, Kate Pycela, and Olivia Vega. The team was coached by Gene Quillia and Janica Quillia.
