Guilford Baseball, Girls’ Lacrosse Lose in State Semifinals; Guerra, Bloss Place at State Open

Baseball

The Guilford baseball team saw its incredible postseason ride come to a close in the Class L State Tournament semifinals last week. No. 10 seed Guilford battled No. 11 Wethersfield for a spot in the state final and took a 4-1 defeat at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford on June 6.

The Indians finished the year at 16-9 overall, having made the SCC Tournament, where they lost 1-0 in eight innings to eventual finalist Hand in the quarterfinal round. In the states draw, Guilford bested East Lyme (6-3), Lyman Hall (4-2), and North Haven (5-4 in 10 innings) in the first three rounds to reach the semis.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians’ girls’ lacrosse squad dropped a 16-8 decision against Hand in the Class M State Tournament semifinals on June 5 at West Haven High School. The 13th-seeded Indians finished their campaign with a record of 14-8 after losing to top-seeded Hand.

Catherine Larrow led the offensive effort with three goals and two assists for the Indians in the semifinal defeat. Maddie Constantino-Lyons added a pair of goals, as did Nicolette Spotlow, while Olivia Clarke also scored a goal for Guilford, which was outshot by a 27-18 margin.

The Indians advanced to the semifinals of both the SCC and Class M State tournaments this year. In states, Guilford also scored road upsets over No. 4 seed Tolland (16-10) and No. 5 Woodstock Academy (14-7) to reach the Final Four.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Jacqueline Guerra finished third in the 1,600, while Meredith Bloss place fifth in the 3,200 for Guilford at the State Open Championship. The Indians scored 10 points to finish in a six-way tie for 25th place at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on June 4.

Guerra came in third for the 1,600 by timing in at 5 minutes and 2.31 seconds at the Open. Bloss also scored points for Guilford when she came in fifth place for the 3,200 with a mark of 11:02.38.

Also at the Open, the Indians’ 4x800 relay team of Julia Esposito, Kelsi Putnam, Chloe Shaw, and Elissa Strand finished 15th (10:09.28); the 4x400 of Meg Reynolds, Putnam, Guerra, and Shaw finished 17th (4:10.04); and Strand placed 17th for the 800 (2:24.40).

On June 9, Guerra finished 22nd for the 1,600 (5:36.97) at the New England Championship at the University of New Hampshire. Bloss finished sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:08.75.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Corey Sondak competed for the Indians at last week’s State Open Championship. Sondak finished 17th for the 100-meter dash behind a time of 11.33 seconds at the meet.

Girls’ Tennis

The Indians were represented in both the singles and doubles competitions at the State Open Tournament that took place from June 3-6.

Faren Roth bested Nonnewaug’s Melissa Real by an 8-2 score in the opening round of the singles bracket. She then lost an 8-2 decision to No. 7 seed Caitlin Sze from South Windsor in the first round.

In doubles, Emily Dietzko and Sam Stofflet were seeded 13th and dropped an 8-4 decision to Taryn Crossley and Rebecca Racz of Shepaug Valley in a first-round contest.

Golf

The Indians finished tied for 12th place at the recent Division II State Championship. Guilford totaled a score of 349 to tie for 12th with Branford at Fairview Farms Golf Course in Harwinton on June 5.

On the par-72 course, Anthony Avallone shot an 84, including a birdie on the third hole, for the Indians. James Marks (88), Josh Krause (88), and Austin Hitchcock (89), and Austin Fix (97) also competed for the team at the state meet.
