Junior Erica Marriott added to her lengthy list of accomplishments, while also breaking new ground, when she took first place in the long jump at the State Open Championship on June 4. Marriott also placed third in the 200-meter dash to score 16 points for the North Haven girls’ outdoor track team, which came in eighth place with 21 points scored at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

Marriott had recently won the long jump for the third straight year at states with her victory at the Class MM State Championship. Last week, she earned the first win of her career at the State Open when reached a distance of 18 feet-1.75 inches to defeat runner-up, Olivia Bowes of Hall (17-11.5), by more than two feet to take the title and score 10 points. In the 200, Marriott ran a time of 24.85 seconds to finish third and score six points for the Indians. Marriott ran a faster time than in her victory at the Class MM State Championship, where she finished at 24.92.

Then on June 9, Marriott took second place in the long jump at the New England Championship when she leaped 18 feet-5.75 inches at the University of New Hampshire. Marriott also finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 25.42. Previously this spring, Marriott won the long jump and 200 at the SCC West Sectional Championship and then placed second in both events at the SCC Championship.

Junior Giselle Zumerchik contributed to North Haven’s point total at the State Open as she finished fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.67, scoring five points and improving upon her mark of 47.15 from when she finished second at the Class MM meet. Zumerchik also ran a time of 16.12 in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles to finish in 16th place. Zumerchik qualified to run the 300 hurdles at the New England Championship, where she finished in 16th place with a time of 48.27 seconds. She had previously won the 300 hurdles at the West Sectional meet this season.

Also at the Open, junior Sarina Sandwell came in 17th place in the triple jump with a distance of 32-8 at the State Open. The Indians’ 4x400 relay of Marriott, Sandwell, junior Sofia Fappiano, and senior Ashley Brown finished 23rd at 4:18.68.
