Markovics and Newfield Reach Class S Doubles Final for Morgan; Daley Places 2nd in 3,200 at State Meet

Boys’ Tennis

The Morgan boys’ tennis team sent several athletes to compete at the Class S State Championship this past week. The Huskies’ most successful showing came from the doubles team of Matt Newfield and Patrick Markovics, who advanced to the championship match of the doubles tournament and were named All-State as a result.

The 3rd-seeded pairing of Newfield and Markovics received a bye through the first round, earned a 6-0, 6-1 win in the second round, and netted a 6-1, 6-1 win in the third round. Then in the quarterfinals, Newfield and Markvoics grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over the 6th-seeded team of Quinn Hartman and Judson O’Brien of Old Lyme. In the semis, the Morgan duo went up against the 2nd-seeded team Zachary Kwalick and Spencer Sivilla from Litchfield and earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory to move on to the championship match. Newfield and Markovics took a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 defeat against Old Lyme’s top-seeded tandem of Morgan Greenho and George Danes of Old Lyme in the final.

Vincent Tino and Garrett Johnson earned a bye through the first round, won in the second round by a 6-3, 6-1 score, and lost in the second round by the final of 6-3, 7-6 (7-6). Chris Nuzzo and John Murray netted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the first round, gutted out a 5-7, 6-3, 11-9 victory in their second-round contest, and then dropped a 6-2, 1-6, 13-11 decision in the third round.

In the singles bracket, JP Nye took a 6-3, 6-4 defeat in the first round, junior Sean Arribas Cockley lost a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the first round, and Drew Marzano took a 6-1, 6-0 defeat in his first-round matchup.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Kate Daley finished in second place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:27.89 to notch the top finish for the Huskies at the Class M State Championship at Willow Brook Park on May 29. Morgan totaled 15 points and came in 18th place at the meet.

Also earning points for Morgan was Mikayla Mancini, who took fifth place in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet-5.5 inches. Additionally, the 4x800 relay quartet of Daley, Allison Gardner, Maura Kelly, and Isabella Ranaudo finished in sixth with a time of 10:07.02.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Morgan opened up play in the Class S State Tournament last week and lost a 10-9 contest against St. Bernard in the first round on May 30. The Huskies finished with an overall mark of 9-9 this spring.

No. 12 seed Morgan got out to a hot start in the first quarter by taking a 5-3 lead and then extended it to 8-5 at halftime. St. Bernard, the No. 5 seed, rallied in the third quarter by scoring to take a 9-8 lead on its way to the 10-9 win. Tyler Newfield had four goals and an assist, while Ryan Cladwell and Ford Pender each added two goals for the Huskies. Zakery Johnson netted a goal, and Tony Coretti added an assist. Matt Luchek made 13 saves in the net.

Baseball

Morgan competed in the Class S State Tournament last week and lost in a first-round contest against Holy Cross. On May 29, the 31st-seeded Huskies took an 8-1 defeat to the 2nd-seeded Crusaders to finish the year at 7-14.

Golf

The Huskies finished in sixth place with a score of 351 at the Shoreline Conference Championship at Stanley Golf Course on May 24.

Morgan’s Will Roberts and Jason Cohen both shot an 81 and finished tied for fourth place at the conference meet. Ethan Tessman turned in a score of 94, while Ryan Powers scored a 95. Matt Zoner finished with a round of 113 for the Huskies.

On May 30, Morgan took a 178-186 loss to Hand in a regular-season match at Madison Country Club. Roberts and Cohen each turned in a score of 42 for Morgan. Ryan Powers scored a 49, and Ethan Tessman finished the day with a 53.

The Huskies overall record on the season was 11-13. Morgan posted a record of 5-5 in the Shoreline Conference.
