Engels Takes the Discus and the Javelin Titles at States; Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Sees Strong Showings in Shorelines

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Senior Danyelle Engels took first place in both the discus and the javelin to lead the Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team at the Class S State Championship on May 31. The Knights finished in fifth place by scoring 42 points at the meet.

Engels provided 26 points for Westbrook by winning two gold medals and a bronze at states. In the discus, Engels launched a throw of 119 feet to take first place by defeating runner-up Alliyah Boothe of Bloomfield, who threw 109 feet. Engels won the javelin by throwing a distance of 107 feet-6 inches, a little more than four feet better than Lyman Memorial’s Allison Powers, who took second place with a 103-2. Engels also finished third in the shot put with a toss of 35-6.

Additionally at states, Westbrook’s 4x100 relay team of Elizabeth Gallagher, Hayden Davis, Erin Metcalfe, and Tirzah Blomquist earned fourth place with a time of 51.83 seconds. In the high jump, Alexandria Young took fifth place with a height of 4 feet-8 inches. Metcalfe grabbed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 33-0.25, and Blomquist recorded a leap of 32-9.75 to take eighth place. Kelly Donlan earned seventh in the shot put at 31 feet.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Vincent Dyer earned third place in the discus with a throw of 140 feet-3 inches for the Knights at last week’s Class S State Championship. He also finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet-1.5 inches. Elijah Panzer took sixth place in the javelin with throw of 136 feet to help Westbrook score 12 points and finish in 18th place at the meet.

Girls’ Tennis

Westbrook saw some players take home All-Shoreline Conference honors last week, after which the Knights competed in the Class S State Tournament.

On May 25, Sara Farnoli earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team after making it to the final of the 1-2 singles bracket of Shoreline Tournament, where she lost a 6-1, 6-2 match against Emily Beck of Haddam-Killingworth. To make the final, Farnoli defeated Brynn McGlinchy of Old Lyme by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

Victoria Koplas won the Shoreline Conference title for the 3-4 singles bracket after claiming a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Ally Arling of Cromwell in the final. She had previously earned a 6-1, 6-2 win versus Emma Bass of Old Lyme in the semis.

Westbrook’s No. 1 team of Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi made it into the semifinals of the doubles tournament, before dropping a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 decision to Valley Regional’s Allie Champion and Ada Ramos.

The next day, the 5th-seeded Knights defeated No. 12 seed Valley Regional by a 4-3 score in the first round of the Class S State Tournament. Farnoli netted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 singles match, and Sarah Davey notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 2 spot. Koplas claimed a 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Westbrook sealed the win when No. 3 duo of Olivia Archer and Julianna Fabrizi secured a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

On May 29, the Knights lost a 5-2 match at 4th-seeded Shepaug Valley to close the season with an overall record of 18-4.

Boys’ Tennis

Nate Comment competed on behalf of the Knights as the No. 6 seed in the singles bracket of the Class S State Championship. Comment grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the first round, won a by 6-3, 6-2 score in the second round, and then lost a 6-4, 6-1, 11-9 decision in his third-round matchup.

Baseball

Westbrook opened play in the Class S State Tournament last week and posted a 6-5 victory versus Shoreline Conference champion Cromwell in the first round, after which the Knights took a 17-9 loss against Somers in a second-round contest. Westbrook finished the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 10-12.

On May 29, the 24th-seeded Knights scored a come-from behind victory to defeat No. 9 seed Cromwell on the road. After falling behind 2-0, Westbrook scored three runs in the fifth to take a one-run lead. Cromwell responded with two runs to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Knights added three more runs in the top of the six to go up for good. Cromwell drew a run closer in the bottom of the seventh, although Westbrook was able to hold off the Panthers and advance to the next round.

Connor Cruz pitched 6.1 innings and picked up the win for the Knights, who saw Cameron Marshall earn the save by pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief. Jack Farrell had two hits to go with two runs and three RBI, while David McCain had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Jason Cordon and Marshall provided a hit and a run apiece, plus Jack Hayes had a hit and an RBI.

The next day, Westbrook lost a 17-9 home contest to No. 25 seed Somers in the second round. Somers jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning, one in the second, and six more in the third. The score proved too much overcome, even though the Knights showed plenty of offense. McCain had four hits to go with three runs and an RBI, while Hayes had three hits, two RBI, and a run. Kyle Robison had a pair of hits and three RBI, Cordon had a hit and two RBI, Cruz had a hit with two runs scored, and Farrell had a pair of walks and two runs scored for Westbrook.
