Both H-K 4x8 Relay Teams Claim State Titles; Baseball, Softball Lose in States

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ outdoor track team saw its 4x800 relay post a first-place finish at the Class M State Championship on May 29. The Cougars scored 24 points and finished tied with Ellington for 10th place at the state meet, which was held at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.

H-K’s 4x800 relay team of Emma Anziano, Julie Kelly, Lexie Bouthillier, and Kelsey D’Amico claimed first place with a time 9 minutes and 43.26 seconds, well ahead of runner-up Hillhouse (9:52.46).

Additionally at the meet, Veronica Chrzanowski finished fourth for the triple jump (35-5.75) and seventh for the long jump (16-9.25) for the Cougars. D’Amico was sixth for the 1,600 (5:29.91), while Anziano finished seventh (5:30.78) in the event. Haddam-Killingworth’s 4x400 relay of Ashley Duncanson, Elena Boyington, Sadie Strom, and Kelly posted a seventh-place finish (4:15.44) at states.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Cougars’ 4x800 relay took first place at last week’s Class M State Championship. Haddam-Killingworth finished in 11th place at the meet by totaling 29 points as a team.

H-K’s 4x800 relay squad of Andrew Meredith, Jonah Spector, Conor McCabe, and Dan Schumann raced to a state title behind a time of 8 minutes and 4.49 seconds, which was a few seconds better than second-place East Catholic (8:07.58).

Also for H-K, Meredith took second place in the 1,600 (4:25.15), only placing behind Windham’s Alex Korczynski (4:24.54). Meredith also finished fourth in the 3,200 (9:46.19). Spector placed sixth in the 1,600 (4:36.05), and Seth Regan finished sixth for the 200 (23.26) for the Cougars at the Class M meet.

Baseball

The Haddam-Killingworth baseball team saw its campaign come to an end when the Cougars lost to Rocky Hill in the first round of the Class M State Tournament last week.

The top-seeded Cougars hosted No. 32 seed Rocky Hill for a first-round matchup on May 29 and took a 4-1 defeat at Haddam-Killingworth High School. The Cougars finished their season with an overall record of 18-4.

Softball

The Cougars’ softball squad was eliminated from the Class M State Tournament when it took a first-round defeat versus Griswold last week.

No. 30 seed Haddam-Killingworth traveled to No. 3 Griswold to play a first-round game in the Class M State Tournament. The Cougars dropped an 8-2 decision against Griswold and finished their year with an overall record of 11-12. H-K also qualified for the Shoreline Conference Tournament this year and advanced to the semifinals after pulling off a 2-1 upset of Coginchaug in the quarterfinal round.
