Guilford Girls’ Track Finishes 3rd at SCC Championship; Girls’ Lacrosse, Tennis Win States Openers

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team received first-place finishes from Jacqui Guerra and Meredith Bloss, as well as its 4x800 relay, en route to scoring 74.5 points to finish third place at last week’s SCC Championship.

Guerra took home the 1,600 title with a time of 5:20.22, edging out teammate Bloss, who took second at 5:21.98. The two then switched placements in the 3,200 with Bloss winning (11:58.71) and Guerra finishing as the runner-up (11:58.90). Gianna Siciliano placed fourth in the event with a time of 12:07.84. The Indians’ 4x800 relay of Julia Esposito, Chloe Shaw, Kelsi Putnam, and Ellissa Strand took first place (9:44.94) over runner-up Hillhouse (9:46.29).

Elsewhere, Sofia Migani finished third for the high jump (4-10) and Nault tied for fourth (4-8); the 4x400 relay of Putnam, Meg Reynolds, Jess Bohan, and Shaw finished fourth (4:12.60); Strand raced to fifth for the 800 (2:23.52), Christina Nault was sixth for the 300 hurdles (49.45), and Migani placed eighth in the triple jump (31-9).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Indians took part in the SCC Championship on at Amity on May 23 and finished in 19th place with seven points.

Corey Sondak came in fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.13 seconds for Guilford. The Indians’ 4x800 relay of Joe Walters, Will Smith, Rhys Kalama, and Will Dinauer came in seventh (8:29.99) to score some points for the squad.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians took a loss to Hand in the SCC Tournament semifinals, before winning their first game in the Class M State Tournament.

No. 5-seeded Guilford took on top-seeded Hand in the SCC semis and dropped a 17-7 loss decision on May 22. Guilford next competed in the Class M State Tournament, where the 13th-seeded Indians crushed No. 20 Watertown, 19-1, in the qualifying round on May 25. Guilford (12-7) next travels to No. 4 Tolland (14-2) in the first round on Tuesday, May 29 at 5 p.m.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Guilford lost to Fairfield Prep in the SCC Tournament semifinals last week and is competing in states this week.

After beating Shelton in the SCC quarterfinals, Guilford finished its regular season by taking a 20-8 loss to New Fairfield on May 21. The No. 3 seed Indians then took a 20-9 loss to No. 2 Fairfield Prep in the SCC Tournament semifinals on May 22.

Guilford (11-7) is the No. 9 seed in the Class M State Tournament and will travel to No. 8 Fitch (10-6) for a first-round game at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford won its quarterfinal match in the SCC Tournament, then took a semifinal loss, but bounced back by winning its first match in the Class L State Tournament. The Indians are 18-4 on the year.

No. 2-seeded Guilford swept No. 7 North Haven, 7-0, in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament on May 21. The Indians’ wins were earned by Faren Roth (6-1, 3-6, 10-4), Charlotte Babbin (6-1, 6-0), Molly Babbin (6-0, 6-0), Acadia Hall (6-0, 6-1); as well as the doubles teams of Sam Stofflet and Emily Dietzko (6-1, 6-0), Elaina Griffiths and Allie Stankewich (6-1, 6-1), and Emma Rand and Morgan Mancuso (6-1, 6-0).

The next day, Guilford took a 4-3 loss against No. 3 Amity in the SCC semis at Yale University.

The Indians then opened play in the Class L State Tournament as the No. 7 seed and swept No. 10 Hall by a 7-0 score in the first round on May 26. Roth (6-4, 6-3), Charlotte Babbin (6-1, 5-7, 6-3), Molly Babbin (6-1, 6-1), and Hall (7-5, 6-4) won their singles matches. The tandems of Stofflet and Dietzko (6-1, 6-1), Griffiths and Stankewich (6-0, 6-1), and Rand and Mancuso (6-0, 6-2) also prevailed.

The Indians will face No. 2 seed Hand (21-0) in the Class L quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 29 at 3 p.m.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians recently competed in the SCC Tournament and made it to the semifinals, before taking a loss to Notre Dame-West Haven. Guilford, which posted a record of 19-3 this spring, is playing in the Class L State Championship this week.

On May 21, No. 3 seed Guilford defeated No. 6 Notre Dame-West Haven 5-2 in the SCC quarterfinals. Facing No. 2 Amity in the semifinals at Yale the next day, the Indians dropped a 4-3 contest.

Softball

The Indians concluded their regular season and then lost in the SCC Tournament quarterfinals week. Guilford is competing in states this week.

Guilford concluded the regular season at 14-6 following a 12-4 win over Shelton on May 21. In the SCC Tournament, the 5th-seeded Indians faced No. 4 Amity in a quarterfinal on May 22 and took a 7-3 defeat.

Next up for the Indians (14-7) is the Class L State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 29. Guilford is seeded 10th and will host No. 23 Rockville (8-11) in the first round at 4 p.m.

Golf

Guilford finished the regular season with a record of 18-5 after earning two wins last week.

Guilford scored a 176 in a tri-match on May 21, dropping decisions against dropped both Hand (161) and Hamden (163). The Indians defeated North Haven 162-180 the next day. Guilford defeated Notre Dame-West Haven 154-176 on May 23, before taking a 155-163 loss to Shelton the following day.

Crew

Guilford competed at the Connecticut Public School Rowing Association (CPSRA) State Championship on May 20. The first boys’ varsity 8 boat finished in sixth place, the second boys’ varsity 8 was fourth, while the novice boys’ 8 and novice boys’ 4 both came in sixth place.

The first varsity girls’ 8 placed eighth overall, and the girls’ varsity 4 was sixth. The novice girls’ 8 capped off an amazing season with a silver-medal finish, while the second girls’ varsity 8 placed sixth to qualify for the New England championship.
