Westbrook's Engels Takes Three at Shorelines, While Girls' Tennis Advances in States; Softball Wins Finale Big

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Senior Danyelle Engels had a remarkable day at the Shoreline Conference Championship by taking first place in three throwing events on behalf of the Westbrook girls’ outdoor track team. Engels won the shot put, discus, and javelin to help the Knights score 57 points and finish in sixth place at Old Saybrook High School on May 23.

In the shot put, Engels grabbed the gold with a throw of 36 feet-2.5 inches. Engels also claimed first place in the discus with a distance of 112-5.5. In the javelin, Engels launched her way into first with a throw of 109 feet-8 inches.

The wins in each event garnered All-Shoreline First Team recognition for the senior thrower.

Kelly Donlan brought home a bronze medal in the shot put with a distance of 31-5.5 for Westbrook. Donlan also earned third place in the discus with her toss of 88-9. Tirzah Blomquist took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 32-7. Additionally, the Knights’ 4x100 relay team of Hayden Davis, Blomquist, Erin Metcalfe, and Elizabeth Gallagher took fifth place with a time of 53.3 seconds.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

The Knights finished sixth place in the Shoreline Conference Championship on May 23. Westbrook scored a total of 36 points behind solid performances from a handful of athletes. Anyone earning gold in an event took home All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors and those winning silver earned All-Shoreline Conference Second Team.

The Knights’ received several points thanks to Vincent Dyer, who grabbed a gold medal in discus for his throw of 141 feet-3 inches. Dyer also took second place in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet-11 inches.

Other notable performances included Elijah Panzera with a second-place throw of 145 feet in the javelin; Andrew Naccaratto, who earned fourth place in the 200-meter dash (23.58 seconds); and Luca Troop, who tied for sixth place in the high jump by clearing 5-4.

Girls' Tennis

The Westbrook girls' tennis team earned a 4-3 win over Valley Regional in the first round of the Class S State Tournament. The 5th-seeded Knights improved to 18-3 and will play at No. 4 seed Shepaug for quarterfinal match at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29.

Previously, Westbrook completed the 2018 regular season with a win and a loss. On May 21, the Knights defeated Morgan 7-0 in home match. Two days later, Westbrook lost a 4-3 contest at home against Cromwell.

Softball

Westbrook picked up a victory in its final game of the spring and finished the campaign with a record of 6-14. The Knights wrapped up on the road against O’Brien Tech, and defeated the Condors in a 22-10 slugfest.

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights took a pair of defeats to finish their season and ended the year with a record of 6-14.

On May 21, Westbrook lost a 5-2 road match at Morgan. Two days later, the Knights closed their regular season with a 5-2 loss at Cromwell.
