Valley Boys’ Lacrosse, Baseball Lose in Conference Tourney; Girls' Tennis Edged by Westbrook in States

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Valley Regional boys’ lacrosse squad earned a 12-8 win home over Morgan in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals on May 22, after which the Warriors took a 9-8 loss to Old Lyme in the final at Indian River Complex in Clinton on May 24. The Warriors, who are now 11-7 overall, are competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

Against Morgan, Valley staked itself to an early lead by scoring five goals in the first quarter. The Huskies attempted to close the gap, but the Warriors proved too much to handle in the end.

Charlie Ferrucci had a huge game for Valley by scoring six goals and providing an assist in its win versus Morgan. Cam Frazier netted three goals with an assist, while Sean Cole had three assists and a goal. Finn Miller had a goal and an assist, and Soren Frantz also put one in the net for the Warriors, who saw Dylan LaPlace make 11 saves in net.

The victory put Valley at an overall record of 11-6 on the season. The Warriors are competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Valley closed out its regular season and then opened play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week. The Warriors won their regular-season finale against Montville with a 20-8 victory on May 22. The next day, Valley lost its Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal matchup against North Branford, 15-4.

Against Montville, the Warriors saw a big game from Hilary Gahran, who had seven goals and two assists. Tory Rider posted five goals and two assists, while Allie Ruel netted three goals and had two assists. Kathryn Burr also scored three goals and added an assist. Kate O’Brien and Maya Gold each scored a goal, while Hanley Ferrucci and Celia Ghilani had an assist apiece.

In the Shoreline semis, Rider scored a pair of goals, while Gahran and Ghilani each had one for Valley. Allie Ruel distributed a couple of assists in the contest.

This week, the Warriors are competing in the Class S State Tournament.

Girls' Tennis

The Warriors took a 4-3 loss at Westbrook in the first round of the Class S State Tournament on May 26. Valley finishes with a record of 14-7 for the season.

Previously, Valley hosted East Hampton/Hale-Ray and took a 6-1 victory. Two days later, Valley earned a 5-2 win on the road against Coginchaug in its regular-season finale.

Baseball

The Valley Regional baseball team defeated Old Saybrook by a score of 11-0 in the Shoreline Conference Tournament quarterfinals on May 23. The next day, the Warriors faced Coginchaug in the semis and took a 4-1 loss to move to 13-9 overall this year. The Warriors will kick off play in the Class M State Tournament this week.

Valley’s game with Old Saybrook began on May 22, when the Warriors scored three runs in the first inning, but then it was suspended due to rain. When the game resumed the next day, the Warriors added two more runs in the second inning and went on get the victory.

Sam Swap threw a two-hit shutout and struck out seven batters in the contest. Valley received hits from throughout its lineup with Chase Morris picking up a pair to go along with two RBI and two runs. Zach Stevens had two hits and two runs scored, as did Jeff Sypher. Also notching hits were Cade Ensinger, Garhett Watrous, Jacob Robertson, Josh Ross, and Nate Robida.

Valley Head Coach Brian Drinkard said his team gave an outstanding effort after taking a lopsided loss to Old Saybrook earlier this season.

“Our team defense was solid and every position player in the lineup had at least one hit. A great team effort with Sam and Josh leading the way by keeping a good-hitting Saybrook team off-balance all day,” said Drinkard. “Old Saybrook hit us hard the first time we played them. If we give Sam a five-run lead, I like our chances.”

Softball

The Warriors split a pair of recent matchups to move to 12-7 with one game left in the regular season. Valley competed in the Shoreline Conference Tournament last week and has the Class M State Tournament this week.

On May 21, Valley traveled to Suffield and won a 6-1 contest. Addy Bullis tallied 15 strikeouts for the win on the mound to go with four hits and two RBI at the plate. Alex Figuenick had three hits, including a double, with two runs and an RBI. Lexi Ross supplied two hits, two runs, and two stolen bases.

Two days later, North Branford defeated the Warriors in a 2-0 contest at Valley Regional. The game was scoreless through four innings, but North Branford scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to get the win. Bullis had another 15-stirkeout performance, while Figuenick, Bullis, Carlee Kirla, and Abby Cunningham each had a hit. Bullis’s hit was a double in the seventh inning.

Boys’ Tennis

The Warriors picked up a victory against East Hampton in their last match of the regular season.

On May 21, Valley hit the road to face the Bellringers and grabbed a 4-3 win to finish at 10-7. This week, the Warriors are competing in the Class S State Championship.

Golf

The Warriors took a pair of losses in their recent matches.

On May 22, Valley headed to the Clinton Country Club to face Morgan and lost a 188-238 contest. The next day, the Warriors hosted Cromwell at Fox Hopyard Golf Club and dropped a 179-229 decision.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Jason O’Brien took first place in two events to lead the Valley Regional boys’ outdoor track team to a fourth-place finish in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Old Saybrook High School on May 23. The Warriors tallied 62 points at the meet.

O’Brien took home first place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet-8.5 inches, and he also claimed gold in the triple jump with a distance of 42-9, earning All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors in both events. Additionally, O’Brien claimed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.93 seconds. Nick Braga triumphed for gold in the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.14 seconds, also making the All-Conference First Team.

Josh Donahue took third place in the high jump by clearing 5-8, and he also finished 12th in the triple jump at 36-6.5. Aiden Walsh placed third in javelin with a distance of 141-9, while Connor Riordan earned fifth in the shot put with a toss of 38-6.

Elsewhere for the Warriors, Andrew Ferguson (23.68) and Nick Braga (23.71) finished in sixth and seventh place, respectively, in the 200. In the 300 hurdles, Josh Arnum took seventh with a time of 45.69. Andrew Ferguson took seventh place in the 100 (11.57) and ninth in the long jump (18-4).

The 4x400 relay of Brian Rankin, Ryan Shasha, Michael Berardis, and Arnum finished in eighth with a time of 4:03.12. Meanwhile, the 4x800 relay team of Miezejeski, Jason Montecalvo, James Diluca, and Arnum finished in ninth place at 9:23.03.

Justin Badolato earned 10th in the discus with a throw of 94-8, while Colin Michaud took 14th with at 84-6. Ryan Shasha was 10th in the high jump at 5-4. In the 400, Rankin finished 10th with his time of 55.94, while Shasha was 24th at 1:01.94. Montecalvo earned 12th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:01.27. Miezejeski finished 18th in the 1,600 (5:10.97) and 18th in the 800 (2:22.65). Alex Brown was 15th in the javelin at 116-8, plus Josh Tibbets leaped 16-11 in the long jump to take 21st.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

The Warriors came in 12th place at the recent Shoreline Conference Championship by posting a total of 16 points at the meet.

Bonnie Caulfield had a strong day for Valley as she brought home a bronze medal in the javelin with her third-place throw of 106 feet-7 inches. She also earned eighth place in the shot put with a toss of 26-8.5 and was 11th in the discus with a distance of 69-4. Also in javelin, Sydney Suedmeier earned fourth place with a distance of 100-9, Jennifer Caulfield took sixth with 98-3, Ashley Bill hit 73-4 for 13th, and Emma King took 16th at 63-7.

In other events, the Warriors’ 4x100 relay of Hanna Babek, Addison Marchese, Audrey Lenda, and Madelyn Costello took eighth place with a time of 54.0 seconds. Addie Byars took ninth place in the 1,600 (6:14.70) and 11th place in the 3,200 (13:36.32). Lenda tied for ninth in the high jump by clearing 4-4. Sydney Suedmeier’s leap of 15-0.5 earned her ninth in the long jump.

The 4x800 relay of Caitlyn Bogan, Samantha Calamari, Byars, and Lacey Rae Hall finished ninth with a time of 11:00.15. Also, the team of Hall, Calamari, Madelyn Costello, and Hanna Babek came in 10th place in the 4x400 at 4:46.69.

Jennifer Caulfield threw a distance of 58-10 for 20th in the discus. Emma King took 18th in the triple jump (28-10.5) and was 20th in the long jump (14), while Lenda placed 29th in the long jump at 13-5.5. In the preliminaries for the 100 hurdles, Marchese (18.01) finished 10th, Suedmeier (18.44) was 14th, and Rachel Trezza (18.59) placed 17th. As for the 100 preliminaries, Marchese came in 11th place at 13.49, Babek came in 20th at 13.84, and Emily Brucker was 33rd at 14.43. Audrey Lenda took 13th in the 200 at 28.47, Babek finished at 29.33 for 22nd, and Hall was 30th at 30.31. Madelyn Costello took 15th in the 300 hurdles by clocking in at 54.5. In the 400, Calamari was 18th with a time of 1:09.27. In the 800, Caitlyn Bogan finished in 20th with a time of 2:49.97. Rachel Trezza took 23rd in the triple jump at 27-6.
