Old Saybrook Boys Place 3rd at Shorelines; Baseball, Girls' Lacrosse Lose in Conference Quarters

Boys Outdoor Track

The Rams earned third place at the Shoreline Conference Championship held at Old Saybrook High School on May 23. Old Saybrook scored 100 points and saw several athletes turn in strong performances.

Jalen Johnson took home gold in the 400 with a time of 51.08, and he won the 200 at 22.81. Johnson also secured silver in the 100 with a time of 11.16. Shane Henderson claimed first place in the 1,600 with his time of 4:28.97, in addition to placing second in the 800 at 2:01.05.

Additionally, two relay teams finished in first place for the Rams: the 4x800 relay of Xavier Rios, Henderson, Luke Hanratty, and Eric Sultini (8:21.62), and the 4x400 quartet of Sultini, Johnson, Cooper Luciani and Rios (3:31.31).

Sultini grabbed second place in the 400 by clocking in at 52.88 and also took fifth in the 800 at 2:04.56. Cooper Luciani earned a third place in the 300 hurdles (44.29), while Jon Barnes took fourth in the high jump (5-6).

Athletes received All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors for taking first place, while second-place finishers were named to the Second Team.

Girls' Tennis

Old Saybrook entered the Class S State Tournament as the No. 13 seed and earned a 6-1 home win over No. 20 seed Lewis Mills on May 26. The Rams later took a 5-2 loss at No. 4 seed Shepaug to finish the year at 15-7 overall

Baseball

Old Saybrook lost a 11-0 contest at home to Valley Regional in the quarterfinals of Shoreline Conference Tournament on May 23. The Warriors took an early lead with three runs in the first inning and added two in the second en route to the win against the Rams (15-6). Jaden Rolon and Patrick Kelley each had a hit for Old Saybrook, which is competing in the Class S State Tournament this week.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams faced Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals on May 22. Old Saybrook lost a 19-17 game against the Wildcats. The Rams will open play in the Class S State Tournament this week.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Rams defeated Bristol Central, 7-3, at home in their season finale on May 21. The win put the Rams’ record at 4-12 for the 2018 campaign.

Old Saybrook led early, going up 5-2 in the first half. Max Chupak had a big night, netting four goals, while adding an assist. Nolan Heiden scored a pair of goals, and Ian Mason scored one. Adding assists for the Rams were Ed Fernandes and James Carlin. Keaton Roarick made seven saves in net.

Golf

Old Saybrook lost a 161-168 home match against Shoreline Conference opponent Portland at the par-35 Fenwick Golf Course on May 21.

Dean Nobile led the Rams with a score of 41. Also competing for the Rams were Kyle Savino (42), Jack Walsh (42), Jay DePalermo (43), and Ben O’Dell (46).
