North Haven Softball Reaches First SCC Semifinal; Girls' Tennis Advances to Class M Quarters

Softball

The North Haven softball team earned a 5-0 home win against in the SCC Tournament semifinals on May 24 to advance to the SCC final for the first time in its history. The 2nd-seeded Indians will face No. 4 seed Amity for the conference championship at Biondi Field at West Haven High School on Saturday, May 25 at 3 p.m.

In the win against 7th-seeded East Haven, junior Lauren Card pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts to lead the Indians to victory. Sarah Lombardi went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, while Haylee Garthwait was 1-for-2 with two RBI for North Haven (18-4).

Previously, North Haven finished its regular season with a record of 16-4 after earning a win versus Cross, after which the Indians captured a 10-6 victory against Lyman Hall in the quarterfinals of the SCC Tournament.

One week after clinching its second straight Oronoque Division title, North Haven hosted Cross for its last divisional game of the year on May 21 and prevailed 12-0 to finish 7-1 in Oronoque play. With the regular season complete, the Indians opened the SCC Tournament by hosting Lyman Hall and won a 10-6 decision in a game that took two days to finish. North Haven grabbed a 9-3 lead by the fourth inning before the rains came on May 22. The game resumed the following day and, despite a comeback effort from Lyman Hall, the Indians held on for the win. North Haven and Lyman Hall are Oronoque Division rivals and had split their regular-season series.

In round three, the Indians scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second, and four in the third to stake themselves to a 9-0 lead. The Trojans rallied for three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-6. However, North Haven tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth and went on to get the victory.

Junior Olivia Petersen had three hits, including a home run, with two RBI to aid the Indians’ offense, which slugged out 12 hits. Junior Peyton Davis had two hits with two RBI and three runs scored, while fellow junior Haylee Garthwait turned in a 3-for-3 performance at the dish. Senior Caroline Gabrielle added a pair of RBI. Junior pitcher Lauren Card earned the win on the mound by scattering seven hits, while striking out seven.

Baseball

One week after getting Bob DeMayo his 900th and 901st wins as head coach of the North Haven baseball team by beating Amity in the SCC quarterfinals, the Indians took a defeat against Fairfield Prep in the semifinal round on May 24. No. 4 seed North Haven traveled to top-seeded Fairfield Prep and lost a 7-0 contest against the Jesuits, who went on to beat Hand 2-1 in the final later that day.

Junior Ben Sbabo got the start on the mound and pitched three scoreless innings for the Indians. Junior John Gontarek, senior Chris Ciarleglio, and junior Hunter Garthwait each pitched one inning of relief in the defeat. Kevin Lucey drew two walks, while fellow senior Nick Perillie singled and stole a base for North Haven.

The Indians (17-5) are the No. 2 seed in the Class L State Tournament and will host No. 31 Woodstock (10-11) in the first round at DeMayo Ballfield at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. With a win, North Haven hosts the winner of No. 15 Bethel and No. 18 Berlin the next day.

Girls' Tennis

North Haven won its first two games of the Class M State Tournament by posting victories against Waterford and Killingly.

The 15th-seeded Indians began the state tourney by playing a Class M qualifying-round match against No. 18 Waterford at Killingly High School on May 26. North Haven came away with a 4-3 victory to move on to a first-round contest against 2nd-seeded Killingly that same day. The Indians won that one, as well, earning a 6-1 win to improve to 13-10 and advance to a quarterfinal contest against No. 10 Lauralton Hall at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29.

North Haven won three of the four singles matches and also received a win at No. 1 doubles to defeat Waterford in the Class M qualifying round. Junior Julia Migliorini prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, senior Rachel Petry won a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 2 singles, and sophomore Anna Wootton claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. The Indians' top doubles team of senior Katrina Nadolny and sophomore Kara Stevens netted a 6-1, 6-4 victory that sealed the win for North Haven.

In the Killingly victory, Migliorini and Petry both earned 6-0, 6-0 wins for the Indians, who saw Wootton take a 6-4, 6-1 win playing at No. 3 singles. Nadolny and Stevens won 6-2, 6-2; the No. 2 duo of senior Avery Hill and Zoe Bowerman prevailed 6-2, 6-1; and the No. 3 team of juniors Daniella Bryson and Jessica Tran won a 6-4, 6-3 decision.

In the previous week's action, North Haven entered the SCC Tournament as the No. 7 seed and took a 7-0 defeat at No. 2 seed Guilford in a quarterfinal matchup on May 21. The following day, the Indians faced Wilcox Tech in their regular-season finale and notched a 6-1 win.

In the SCC quarterfinals, senior Rachel Petry moved up to the No. 1 singles position and gave Guilford's Faren Roth a run for her money in a 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 defeat.

Against Wilcox Tech, junior Julia Migliorini, Petry, junior Lily Mezzi, and sophomore Anna Wootton each earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the singles matches. For doubles, the Indians' No. 1 tandem of Katrina Nadolny and Avery Hill claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory, while the No. 3 team of fellow seniors Nicolette Maselli and Jashan King prevailed 7-6, 6-1. Senior Alexis Arcangelo and Julia Loda teamed up to play No. 2 doubles for North Haven and took a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.

Boys' Lacrosse

The North Haven boys' lacrosse team won its opening game of the Class M State Tournament by defeating RHAM on in the qualifying round on May 24. The Indians went on the road and earned a 12-3 victory at 14th-seeded RHAM. No. 19 seed North Haven improved to 9-8 and will play at 3rd-seeded Weston (13-3) in a first-round contest at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30.

Previously, North Haven hosted Farmington in its regular-season finale on May 21 and claimed an 11-9 victory on Senior Night. The Indians finished the regular season with a record of 8-8.

Girls' Lacrosse

The Indians are playing in the Class M State Tournament for the fourth straight season this week. North Haven recently completed a regular season that saw the squad go 11-5, win the SCC Division II title, and secure its first berth in the SCC Tournament.

North Haven will open play in states as the No. 9 seed and will play at No. 8 Barlow (11-5) in the first round on Tuesday, May 29. With a win, the Indians would either play at No. 1 seed or host No. 16 St. Joseph in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 31 at 5 p.m.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Junior Erica Marriott posted second-place finishes in the 200-meter dash and the long jump for the Indians at the SCC Championship on May 23. North Haven finished with 39 points and finished in eighth place at Lyman Hall High School.

Marriott ran a time of 25.12 seconds to take second in the 200 and also recorded a distance of 16 feet-11 inches for runner-up honors in the long jump at SCCs. Fellow junior Giselle Zumerchik finished fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.77. In the 100 hurdles, Zumerchik ran a 15.63 for second place in the preliminaries and then timed in at 15.87 for fourth place in the finals. Sarina Sandwell took fourth place in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, and fellow junior Camille Sahirul was sixth at 32-3. Sahirul also finished 12th in the long jump with a 14-7.

North Haven’s 4x400 relay of Marriott, junior Ashley Brown, freshman Sofia Fappiano, and Sandwell finished sixth (4:13.13); the 4x100 of sophomore Elizabeth DeVaux, Zumerchik, freshman Paula Fappiano, and Sandwell placed seventh (53.12); and the 4x800 of senior Macey DiCarlo, sophomore Jackie Howlett, and sophomores Cecile Tobin and Reagan Forbes finished in 10th place (11:21.77).

Giuliana Ciarleglio finished 12th in the javelin (81-3), while fellow sophomore Courtney McFarland came in 13th place for the shot put (28-2). DeVaux finished 17th for the prelims of the 100 hurdles at 18.71.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Sophomore Kyle Maruca finished in the top four of two throwing events for North Haven at the SCC Championship. The Indians scored 16 points and finished in 15th place at the meet.

Maruca took third place in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet-7.5 inches, in addition to placing fourth in the discus with a distance of 125-9. Fellow sophomore Ethan Okwuosa recorded a fifth-place showing in the long jump behind a leap of 20-9.5. Sophomore Eric Spignesi finished seventh in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, while junior Robert Farley took 10th in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 43.26.

The Indians’ 4x100 relay of sophomores Jianni Snipes and juniors Chris Moran, John Crispi, and Jacob Wrum finished 12th (47.49); and the 4x400 of junior Jack Opramolla, Wrum, senior Matt Biehl, and Crispi came in 13th place (3:42.92).

Sophomore Luke Maruca finished 10th in the shot put (41-5), Dominic Borrelli took 13th in the shot put (40-4.5) and 23rd for the discus (90-4), and sophomore Matt Mullen placed 17th in the discus (101-0) and 21st in the shot put (35-8). Wurm finished 16th in the pole vault (9-6), and Moran took 17th in the long jump (17-2).

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven is competing in the Class L State Championship this week. The Indians posted a regular-season record of 9-9 to qualify for the Class L State Championship for the fifth year in a row.

Golf

North Haven completed its regular season by taking defeats against Guilford and Shelton, but still finished with a winning record of 7-6 this spring.

On May 22, North Haven hosted Guilford at Wallingford and dropped a 162-180 decision. Sophomore Julia Raposo shot a 41, Ian Crowther finished with a 43, fellow junior Alex Kirtland had a score of 44, while Mike Collins and fellow junior Andrew Johnson both turned in a round of 52 for the Indians.

The next day, the Indians faced Shelton and lost a 163-214 contest at Brownson Country Club.

North Haven is competing in the Division II State Championship at Fairview Farms Golf Course in Harwinton at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5.
