Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Clinches Shoreline Title; Baseball Closes Regular Season with a Split

Girls’ Tennis

The Westbrook girls’ tennis team clinched the Shoreline Conference title by netting a pair of victories last week, while improving to 16-2 with two regular-season matches to play. The Knights defeated both North Branford and Valley Regional by 4-3 scores last week. Those two wins, combined with Cromwell’s loss to Old Saybrook on May 18, put the conference crown in the books for Westbrook.

On May 14, the Knights posted a 4-3 victory over North Branford. Westbrook picked up one win in the singles matches, and that victory was secured at No. 3 singles by Victoria Koplas, who prevailed 6-3, 6-1. The Knights swept the doubles matchups with Marilyn Ulanowicz and Olivia Fabrizi taking the 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 1 position. Lexie Vumback and Alyssa Esposito scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 2 doubles match, while Olivia Archer and Julianna Fabrizi notched a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.

Three days later, Westbrook defeated Valley Regional on the road by a score of 4-3. In the No. 1 singles match, Farnoli earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory, while Sarah Davey earned 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. Koplas grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position. The No. 2 duo of Vumback and Esposito played a marathon match and claimed a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) win.

The Knights will compete in the Class S State Tournament that begins on Saturday, May 26.

Boys’ Tennis

The Knights lost their lone match last week by taking a 5-2 defeat against Valley Regional on May 17. Westbrook now owns a 6-12 record on the season.

Baseball

The Westbrook baseball team won one of its three games last week and finished the regular season with a 9-11 record.

On May 14, the Knights lost a 10-1 contest at Old Saybrook. Dan Perreault and Jason Cordon both went 2-for-3, David McCain had a pair of hits, while Connor Cruz and Jack Hayes had a hit apiece for Westbrook.

The next day, the Knights lost a 6-3 game on the road against Old Lyme. The Wildcats took an early lead in the game, and Westbrook was unable to come all the way back before the end of the contest. Cruz picked up a pair of hits and an RBI, while Hayes went 2-for-3. Cameron Marshall had a 2-for-3 showing with an RBI and a run for Westbrook. Jake Marciniec had two hits and a run scored.

On May 17, Westbrook grabbed a 4-3 win at Stafford. Connor Cruz pitched a complete game for the win and struck out six. Kyle Robison went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored, and Marshall was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Perreault had a hit and an RBI, and McCain notched a hit, a run, and a walk.

The Knights are slated to begin the Class S State Tournament on Tuesday, May 29.

Softball

The Knights picked up a win in their two games last week and are 5-13 on the season.

On May 14, Westbrook claimed an 18-6 home triumph over Holy Family. Callie Newberg earned the win on the mound over five innings of work for the Knights. Newburg also had two hits and two RBI at the plate. Carolyn Bauman had three hits, two RBI, and three runs scored, while Olivia Hartzell added a pair of hits to go with two RBI and three runs. Alivia Ciarcia went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, plus a walk.

On May 18, the Knights took a 17-2 loss on the road against Windsor Locks.
