Softball

The Valley Regional softball team won both of its games in convincing fashion last week to boost its record to 11-6 on the year. The Warriors, who recorded 13-0 victories over both East Hampton and Kennedy, have three games remaining in the regular season, before they compete in the Shoreline Conference and Class M State tournaments.

On May 14, Valley defeated fellow Shoreline Conference opponent East Hampton in a 13-0 road win behind an outstanding performance from junior pitcher Addy Bullis, who tossed a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts. Lexi Ross turned in a big day at the plate with two hits, a pair of walks, and four runs scored for the Warriors. Valley totaled 10 hits in the victory with Ross, Alex Figuenick, and Olivia Porcaro all hitting doubles, while Abby Cunningham had a double and a triple.

Two days later, the Warriors hosted Kennedy and claimed a 13-0 non-conference victory over the Eagles behind another shutout performance on the mound by Bullis, who allowed three hits and struck out 13 in the five-inning victory.

Carlee Kirla provided three hits that included a triple to go with three RBI. Ross caused havoc on the base paths by getting on with four base hits and stealing four bases. Cunningham knocked a double among her three base hits and drove in two, while Hannah Jenkins had a double, a single, and two RBI.

Baseball

The Valley Regional baseball squad dropped a pair of contests last week to finish the regular season with an overall record 12-8.

On May 14, the Warriors took a 14-4 home loss against Portland on Senior Night. Prior to the game, Valley honored the members of its senior class, who are Chase Morris, Blair Allen, Sam Swap, Zach Stevens, Jacob Yeager, and Colin Sparaco.

On May 18, the Warriors lost a 5-2 decision on the road against Coginchaug. Sophomore Cade Ensinger took a tough-luck loss by giving up just two earned runs for Valley. Fellow sophomore Nate Robida finished the game in relief for the Warriors.

With the regular season in the books, Valley enters the Shoreline Conference Tournament as the No. 6 seed this week, after which the Warriors will compete in the Class M State Tournament beginning on Tuesday, May 29.

The Warriors also recently saw a few of their athletes named to the All-Shoreline Conference Team for their performance on the field this season. Senior pitcher Sam Swap received All-Shoreline Conference First Team honors, as did fellow senior shortstop Chase Morris. Junior catcher Josh Ross made the All-Shoreline Conference Second Team for Valley Regional.

Boys’ Lacrosse

The Valley Regional boys’ lacrosse team netted three wins last week to close out the regular season with a record of 10-6 and a five-game win streak intact. The Warriors defeated Old Saybrook, Haddam-Killingworth, and Suffield in last week’s matchups.

On May 15, Valley defeated Old Saybrook in a 12-0 shutout win at home. Senior Charlie Ferrucci had a huge night with four goals to go with four assists for the Warriors. Sophomore Cam Frazier and senior Finn Miller both notched three goals in the contest. Junior Rick Persico had two goals and an assist, while Sean Cole provided a pair of helpers. Junior goalkeeper Dylan LaPlace recorded seven saves in net for Head Coach George Hudson’s club.

The next day, the Warriors recorded a 13-4 win at Haddam-Killingworth in another Shoreline Conference contest.

On May 16, Valley Regional celebrated Senior Night by hosting a doubleheader in conjunction with the girls’ team and received a forfeit victory over Suffield.

The defending conference champion Warriors open play in the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week. After that, Valley will compete in the Class S State Tournament.

Boys’ Tennis

The Valley Regional boys’ tennis squad grabbed two wins in its three matches last week and now has a 10-7 record on the season. The Warriors, who defeated Morgan and Coginchaug, have qualified for the Class S State Championship that starts on Saturday, May 26.

On May 14, Valley hosted Morgan and lost a 5-2 match against the Huskies. Two days later, the Warriors won in a 6-0 shutout against Coginchaug to clinch a spot in the postseason. On May 17, Valley earned a 5-2 victory against Westbrook on the road.

Girls’ Tennis

The Warriors’ girls’ tennis team gained a split of its two matchups last week, including a shutout victory versus Morgan, to up its record to 12-6 on the campaign.

On May 14, Valley earned a 7-0 win over Morgan on the road. Three days later, the Warriors lost a close contest against Westbrook by the final score of 4-3 at home.

Valley will begin play in the Class S State Tournament on Saturday, May 26.
