Rams’ Baseball, Girls’ Lacrosse Finish Regular Season Strong; Girls’ Tennis Improves to 13-6

Baseball

The Old Saybrook baseball team defeated Westbrook, Portland, and Creed-Hillhouse last week to finish its regular season with a record of 15-5. The Rams, who also took a loss against Coginchaug, are diving into postseason play starting with the Shoreline Conference Tournament this week.

On May 14, Old Saybrook recorded a 10-1 win against Westbrook at home. The Rams took the early lead and then scored five runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Hayden Lockhart went 2-for-4 with a run scored, as did Jordan Butler. Ryan DuBord was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run, while Sebby Gallitto had two hits and a pair of runs scored. Dubord picked up the win on the mound, pitching six innings and racking up 10 strikeouts. Cooper Pavlovich pitched an inning to finish the game.

Three days later, the Rams secured a 9-1 victory at Portland. Old Saybrook took the lead early and didn’t allow a Portland run until the bottom of the seventh inning. Earning the win on the mound was Dan Cote, who tallied 10 K’s and only gave up two hits. Pavlovich came on in relief and pitched an inning for the Rams. Jaden Rolon went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Jack Colella had a couple of base hits and scored two runs, along with an RBI and a walk. DuBord went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, plus a walk. Patrick Kelley had a 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The day after that, Old Saybrook took a 1-0 loss at Coginchaug. The Blue Devils took a one-run lead in the first inning and held on the for the win. Kelley had a pair of hits in the contest.

On May 20, Old Saybrook earned a 6-1 win at home against Creed-Hillhouse. After giving up a run in the top of the first, Old Saybrook would not allow another the rest of the way. The Rams tied the game in the bottom half of the first and scored their biggest blow of the game by plating three runs in the sixth. Coella notched the victory on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing three hits and a run. Pavlovich and Joseph Bradley each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Lockhart provided two hits and an run, while Cote had two hits and two runs. DuBord had another two-hit day and also scored a run. Butler had a base knock, a run and an RBI, as did Kelley. Pavlovich grabbed a hit and a run, and Rolon drove in a run, as well.

The Rams are playing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament that began on May 22 (after press time). If Old Saybrook wins in the quarterfinals, the team moves on to the semifinals on May 23 (after press time). The final takes place on Friday, May 25.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Rams won their last three matchups of the regular season to enter the postseason with a record of 11-5.

On May 15, Old Saybrook scored a 16-14 victory over Valley Regional at home. The next day, the Rams defeated Haddam-Killingworth by a score of 15-6. Then on May 17, Old Saybrook secured a 13-11 win against Lauralton Hall.

The Rams are competing in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and then have the Class S State Tournament after that.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Old Saybrook lost a pair of games last week and drop to 3-12 on the season.

On May 15, the Rams took a 12-0 loss at Valley Regional. Keaton Roarick had 14 saves in the contest.

Two days later, Old Saybrook lost a 6-5 decision at home against Haddam-Killingworth. Old Saybrook had a 5-2 lead through three quarters, but the Cougars mounted a comeback in the fourth by scoring four goals to go ahead. Alem Tiden, Ed Fernandes, Conor Duncan, and Mac Chupak scored goals for the Rams in the loss. Keaton Roarick made 25 saves in net for the Rams.

Girls’ Tennis

The Rams scored a pair of victories between last week’s three matches to move to 13-6 on the season.

On May 14, Old Saybrook lost a 6-1 decision at Old Lyme. The Rams’ lone victory in the contest came from Tanya Gianitsos, who netted a 7-5, 6-3 win in the No. 1 singles match.

On May 16, the Rams celebrated Senior Night with an indoor contest against North Branford to avoid the rain and won the match by the final of 6-1. Gianitsos earned a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles spot. In No. 3 singles, Emma Rogan secured a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory. Ana Hester grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 match. The duo of Arina Jiang and Amy Young claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 1 doubles position. Katie Conklin and Audra Giugno earned a 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles match. Alice Gadon and Claudia Winiarskyj triumphed with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 win at the No. 3 spot.

Two days later, the Rams headed to Cromwell and notched a 4-3 victory against the Panthers. Gianitsos earned a 6-3, 6-1 win, while Sam Fucci netted a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. The duos of Conklin and Giugno (6-1, 6-1), as well as Gadon and Winiarskyj (6-4, 6-4), secured wins on the doubles courts to clinch the victory for Old Saybrook.

The Rams have one more regular-season match, after which they will compete in the Shoreline Conference Tournament and then the Class S State Tournament.

Boys’ Tennis

The Rams netted one win in their three matches last week to finish their regular season with an 11-6 record.

On May 14, Old Saybrook lost a 5-2 decision at home against Old Lyme. Two days later, the Rams hosted North Branford and snagged a 7-0 win against the Thunderbirds. On May 18, Old Saybrook lost a 5-2 match at home to Cromwell.

Golf

Old Saybrook played three matches last week and won one of them to bring its record to 9-3 on the year.

On May 14, the Rams defeated Valley Regional at Fox Hopyard Golf Course with a 178–230 decision over the Warriors. Jay Depalermo shot a 42 on the day, while Kyle Savino was right behind him with a 43. Ben O’Dell (46) and Jack Walsh (47) also hit the course for Old Saybrook.

The next day, Old Saybrook hosted Old Lyme at Fenwick Golf Course and lost to the Wildcats by a score of 152-166. Savino shot the lowest score for the Rams with 39. Next was Walsh at 41, followed by Dean Nobile with a score of 42. O’Dell scored a 44 on the day, and DePalermo turned in a 47.

On May 17, the Rams lost a 164-171 match against Cromwell at TPC River Highlands. Savino and Walsh both scored 42 on the day, O’Dell turned in a score of 43, DePalermo had a score of 44, and Matt Rothman tallied a 48 in the loss.
