Sondak Dashes to Victory at East Sectionals; Both Lacrosse Teams Win SCC Openers

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Corey Sondak finished first in the 100-meter dash for the Guilford boys’ outdoor track team at the SCC East Sectional Championship last week. As a team, the Indians finished in 10th place with 20 points scored at the sectional meet, which was held on May 14 at Amity.

Sondak took the top spot in the 100 by timing in at 11.04 seconds to defeat runner-up Erik Lorent of Shelton, who ran a time of 11.09. Also for the Indians, the 4x800 relay of Joe Walters, McKendry Eschinger, Will Dinauer, and Will Smith finished sixth (8:27.34), Ben Crair took seventh in the 1,600 (4:44.45), Mark McNamara finished sixth in the pole vault (10-6), and Connor Rose placed seventh in the discus (114-7).

Boys’ Lacrosse

Guilford scored a victory over Xavier last week to finish the regular season at 10-5, after which the Indians opened play in the SCC Tournament by defeating Shelton.

The Indians edged out Xavier by a 12-11 score in their regular-season finale on May 14. In the first round of SCCs on May 20, No. 3 seed Guilford faced No. 6 Shelton and prevailed by a 16-4 score.

The Indians played at No. 2 seed Fairfield Prep in the SCC semifinals on May 22 (after press time). With a win, Guilford would face the winner of top-seeded Hand and No. 4 Cheshire for the title at West Haven High School at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, May 24.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The Indians completed their regular season with a record of 10-6 after splitting recent two matchups and then competed in the SCC Tournament, where they notched a win versus Mercy in their opening contest.

Guilford took a 17-10 loss to Cheshire on May 14. The Indians then were defeated by Mercy, 14-13, on May 17.

Facing No. 4 seed Mercy in the first round of the SCC Tournament on May 20, No. 5 Guilford avenged its previous loss by winning a 16-10 contest against the Tigers. The game was tied 5-5 at halftime, before the Indians ran away with the victory in the second half.

The Indians played at No. 1 seed Hand in the SCC semis on May 22 (after press time). If Guilford wins, it will take on the winner of No. 2 Cheshire and No. 3 Branford for the conference crown at West Haven High School on Thursday, May 24 at 4:30 p.m.

Boys’ Tennis

The Indians concluded their regular season at 18-2 following a pair of wins last week. Guilford defeated Cheshire 6-1 on May 14 and then edged Fairfield Prep 4-3 on May 16. The Indians are competing in the SCC Tournament this week.

Girls’ Tennis

Guilford finished the regular season with a mark of 16-3 after recording three more victories in last week’s action. Next up for the Indians is the SCC Tournament that takes place this week.

The Indians defeated Mercy 6-1 on May 14. Guilford’s wins came from Faren Roth (6-1, 6-0), Molly Babbin (6-0, 6-0), and Acadia Hall (3-6, 6-2, 10-7), as well as the doubles teams of Sam Stofflet and Emily Dietzko (6-1, 5-7, 6-0), Elaina Griffiths and Allie Stankewich (6-2, 6-3), and Emma Rand and Veronica Zimmer (7-5, 1-6, 10-7).

Guilford then edged Stonington by a 4-3 final on May 17. The team’s victories were earned by Charlotte Babbin (6-3, 6-3) and Molly Babbin (6-1, 6-1), plus the teams of Stofflet and Dietzko (6-1, 3-6, 6-3), Griffiths and Stankewich (4-6, 6-2, 7-5).

The Indians posted a 6-1 win over Hamden in their regular-season finale. Roth (6-1, 6-0), Molly Babbin (6-2, 6-2), and Hannah Dietzko (6-0, 6-0) prevailed on the singles court for Guilford. The Indians’ tandems of Stofflet and Emily Dietzko (6-0, 6-0), Emma Rand and Kiera Stankewich (6-1, 6-2), and sisters Charlotte Zimmer and Veronica Zimmer (6-0, 6-0) were also victorious.

Baseball

The Indians finished their regular season with a record of 13-7 after claiming victory in their of their last four games.

Noah Rubino threw a no-hitter for Guilford when it defeated Foran 4-0 on May 14 to conclude SCC Oronoque Division play at 5-3. Rubino had previously combined with teammate Tom Cattaneo for a no-hitter earlier in the season.

Then on May 18, the Indians blasted Lyman Hall by an 11-1 score. Guilford closed the regular season with a doubleheader on May 20 against Morgan and Branford. The Indians blanked Branford 2-0 and then shut out Morgan 10-0.

Softball

The Indians are now 13-6 after earning a split in two games this past week.

Guilford first defeated Law 4-2 on Senior Night on May 14 to finish its SCC Hammonasset Division schedule with a record of 6-2. Law got on the board when Gina Boccamazzo tripled and scored with two outs in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by Emily Morey gave Law a 2-0 edge in the fourth inning. Guilford started coming back in the bottom of the fifth, when Jordyn Goldstein ripped a line drive over the fence for a two-out, two-run home run.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Charlotte Young got the offense going with a one-out bunt single. Eva Ott Hill laid down a sacrifice bunt and Young beat out the throw to second. Ava Gladwin then drove a double to left-center field to score Young with the go-ahead run. Guilford finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Leah Kornguth to deep left field to bring home pinch runner Jillian Batick. Amanda King struck out seven and scattered five hits to earn the win. King, Young, and Sara Barreira were honored by the Indians before their Senior Night victory.

Guilford closed the week with a 6-4 loss to Hand on May 18.

Golf

Guilford heads into the last week of the regular season a record of 16-2 after winning four of its five matchups last week.

Guilford took two out of three in a quad-match on May 14 by posting a score of 182 to lose against Hand (159), while defeating Branford (183), and Morgan (197). The Indians next defeated Foran 155-199 on May 16 and then posted a 157-177 win versus Law on May 17.

Crew

Guilford competed in the Novice Regatta on May 13 on the Connecticut River in Middletown.

In a tournament-style regatta of 11 teams, the girls’ boat won the regatta, marking Guilford’s highest finish in the history of the event. The girls remain undefeated overall in their regular season. Also for the Indians, the boys’ A8+ finished third, while the boys’ B8+ placed seventh.
