Indians Notch Five Victories at Sectionals; Girls’ Lacrosse, Softball Take Division Titles

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Erica Marriott posted a pair of first-place finishes, while fellow junior Giselle Zumerchik won an event and took second in another for the North Haven girls’ outdoor track team at the SCC West Sectional Championship on May 18. The Indians scored 79 points and came in fourth place at the meet.

Marriott ran a time of 25.33 seconds to finish first in the 200-meter dash and recorded a leap of 18 feet-0.5 inches for first place in the long jump at the sectional meet. Zumerchik won the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.62. In the 100 hurdles, Zumerchik ran the fastest time of 16.07 in the preliminaries and then took second in the finals at 16.75.

Junior Sarina Sandwell placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 34-4, and fellow junior Camille Sahirul finished fourth at 33-2 for North Haven. Sahirul also finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-3.5. In the shot put, sophomore Courtney McFarland finished in third with a throw of 30-8.25. The 4x800 relay of Sandwell, Sahirul, freshman Sofia Fappiano, and Marriott finished third at 4:19.17.

Sophomore Giuliana Ciarleglio finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 78-11. Sophomore Elizabeth DeVaux qualified for the finals of the 100 hurdles and then ran a time of 19.17 to finish eighth.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

Sophomore Kyle Maruca claimed first place in a pair of throwing events for the Indians at last week’s SCC West Sectional Championship. North Haven placed seventh as a squad by scoring 51 points at the meet.

Maruca took first place in the shot put with a distance of 43 feet-9.25 inches, in addition to winning the discus behind a throw of 130 feet-8 inches at sectionals. Junior Robert Farley took third place in the 300 hurdles by running a time of 42.36 seconds. In the 100 hurdles, Farley placed fourth for the prelims at 16.87 and then finished eighth in the finals with a time of 18.12.

Sophomore Luke Maruca took fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 40-9.75 for North Haven. Ethan Okwuosa finished fifth in the long jump (20-5), while fellow sophomore Eric Spignesi cleared 10-6 for fifth place in the pole vault. Matt Mullen placed sixth in both the shot put (38-1) and the discus (103-2). Fellow sophomore Dominic Borrelli took eighth place in the shot put (36-5.5) and ninth in the discus (97-11).

Girls’ Lacrosse

North Haven hosted Law on Senior Night in a game that determined the SCC Division II champion and an automatic berth into the SCC Tournament. The Indians netted an 18-11 victory on May 16 to clinch their first SCC tourney berth and finish the regular season at 11-5.

Senior Kylie Brandt had five goals with three assists, while junior Annie Uyeki scored five goals to go with an assist in the victory. Junior Meg Christoforo scored four goals, senior Courtney Babbidge, Jill Rowland, and fellow junior Molly Scarpa each scored a goal, plus junior Grace Gillooly and senior Madison Fredericks added one assist apiece. Sophomore Kyla Kennealy made nine saves in net for North Haven.

On May 19, the Indians opened play in the SCC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and dropped a 21-6 decision at No. 3 Branford in a quarterfinal game. Brandt scored four goals, and Uyeki netted a pair of goals for North Haven (11-6), which will next be competing in the Class M State Tournament.

Boys’ Lacrosse

North Haven took an 18-3 loss to Fairfield Prep on May 14 and then dropped a 10-5 decision at Amity on May 17. With their record of 8-7, the Indians have one game left in the regular season, before they compete in the Class M State Tournament.

Softball

North Haven recorded a 3-1 win over SCC Oronoque Division opponent Lyman Hall last week to clinch its second straight division title. The Indians also took a 3-1 loss to Amity and are 15-4 with one game left in the regular season. North Haven will be competing in the SCC Tournament and the Class L State tournament after that.

North Haven clinched its eighth Oronoque Division title and its second in a row since the division was realigned last year by defeating Lyman Hall last week. Lauren Card pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts, while fellow junior Gigi Russo hit a two-run homer for the Indians. Card allowed no earned runs on just four hits and no walks to pick up her 15th win. Russo also had a single for the Indians, who were aided by two hits apiece from juniors Olivia Petersen and Sarah Lombardi.

Three days later, the Indians dropped a 3-1 decision at Amity. Card pitched all six innings for North Haven, which scored its run on an RBI single by junior Haylee Garthwait.

Girls’ Tennis

North Haven won all three of its matches last week to improve to 11-8 and clinch a berth in the SCC and Class M State tournaments.

The Indians netted a 5-2 victory at Hamden on May 14. Junior Julia Migliorini won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while senior Rachel Petry claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2. Sophomore Anna Wootten earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 4 singles matchup. The Indians’ No. 2 doubles duo of senior Avery Hill and junior Zoe Bowerman won 6-3, 6-2, and the No. 3 team of juniors Daniella Bryson and Jessica Tran prevailed 6-1, 6-2.

Then on May 17, North Haven earned a 5-2 win over Sacred Heart Academy to seal its berth in states. Migliorini and Petry both prevailed 6-0, 6-0, while Wootton won a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Hill and Bowerman claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win, and Bryson and Tran won 6-0, 6-3.

The Indians capped off the week by posting a 5-2 victory at Sheehan on May 20. Migliorini (6-0, 6-0), Petry (6-1, 6-0), junior Lily Mezzi (6-2, 6-1), and Wootton (6-0, 6-1) won their singles matches, while the No. 3 doubles team of Tran and Bryson earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Boys’ Tennis

North Haven won two of its last three regular-season matches to finish at 9-9 and qualify for the Class L State Championship.

North Haven started off by posting a 7-0 home shutout over East Haven on May 14. Junior Nick Cristante a earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 singles match. Senior Riley Powell prevailed 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles; fellow senior Matt Carroll won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3; and junior Max Petruzziello won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles contest. For doubles, North Haven’s No. 1 team of junior Quinn Dallai and freshman Tanner Powell netted an 8-2 win; the No. 2 team of senior Ethan Pavano and sophomore Andrew Carmody won 8-6; and the No. 3 tandem of junior Jake Barra and sophomore Laekrham Singh won 8-0.

Then on May 17, the Indians notched a 6-1 victory at Career to solidify their spot in states. Riley Powell and Carroll both won 7-0 decisions, while the team of Dallai and Tanner Powell also prevailed 6-0, 6-0 to lead North Haven to the win.

The next day, North Haven took a 7-0 defeat at Branford in its regular-season finale.

Golf

North Haven hosted Hillhouse and Career at Wallingford Country Club on May 14. The Indians posted a score of 176 to defeat both Hillhouse (234) and Career (254), while improving to 7-4 on the spring.

Junior Alex Kirtland was the match medalist by posting a low total of 38. Sophomore Julia Raposo finished with a 45, junior Andrew Johnson scored a 45, and junior Ian Crowther shot a 48 in the victory.
