Francois, Figueroa, Boys’ 4x100 Secure Victories at West Sectionals

Girls’ Outdoor Track

Kisha Francois took first place in the 100-meter dash and scored points in three different events for the East Haven girls’ outdoor track team at the SCC West Sectional Championship. The Yellowjackets totaled 59 points and finished in sixth place at the meet on May 18.

Francois placed first for the 100 by winning the final heat with a time of 12.725 seconds, just a mere .003 seconds better than Hamden’s runner-up Andreya Gardner, who clocked in at 12.728. In the qualifying heat, Francois had run the fastest time of 12.80 seconds. Francois also scored points in the long jump and the 200-meter dash. In the long jump, Francois placed second with a leap of 16 feet-6 inches. She also grabbed sixth place in the 200 behind a time of 27.43 seconds. Overall, Francois scored 21 points for the Yellowjackets at sectionals.

Haley Montesanto, Isabella Ragaini, and Summer Onorato also scored points in multiple events for East Haven. Montesanto scored 11 combined points in the hurdling events as she finished third in the 300-meter hurdles at 50.49 seconds and fourth in the 100 hurdles at 17.16 seconds. Ragaini placed second in the javelin with a throw of 103 feet-1 inch, and she also finished in seventh place in the 300-meter hurdles at 53.26 seconds. Onorato was third in the javelin with her throw of 99 feet- 6 inches to go with an eighth-place spot in the shot put and a toss of 24 feet-11 inches.

Molly Mazzucco scored eight points in the high jump as she finished in second place with a height of 4 feet-8 inches. Natalia Gentile rounded out the scoring at the meet for the Yellowjackets as she took seventh in the long jump, finishing with a distance of 14 feet-11 inches.

Other performances for the Easties included Gentile in the 100 (13th, 13.71) and 200 (21st, 29.76), Mazzucco in the triple jump (11th, 28-11), Samantha Schlottman in the javelin (10th, 66-1) and shot put (12th, 20-11), plus Daniela Sarmiento in the shot put (14th, 14-3.5).

Boys’ Outdoor Track

East Haven saw several athletes compete at last week’s SCC West Sectional Championship. The Yellowjackets took ninth place at the meet with a score of 43 points.

The Yellowjackets dominated the 110-meter high hurdles as Radames Figueroa and Evan Damian finished in first and second place, respectively, to score 18 points in the event. The duo took the top two spots in both the qualifying and final heats for East Haven. Figueroa won the event by finishing with a time of 16.10 seconds in the final after qualifying with a time of 16.18. Damian raced to a time of 16.11 in the final after running a 16.42 in the prelims.

Also securing a first-place finish was the 4x100 relay team of Jay Donaldson, Jordan Ingram, Tom Myerholz, and Mike Castellano. The quartet scored 10 points after clocking in with a time of 43.73 to edge both Fairfield Prep and West Haven by less than a second.

Calvin Nelson scored eight points by placing in two events. His best performance came in the discus as he finished in third with a throw of 106 feet-4 inches. Nelson also placed seventh in shot put with a toss of 37 feet-6.5 inches. Donaldson was in the thick of it during the 100-meter dash and finished the final heat in fourth place with a time of 11.21 to score four points. Donaldson had placed second in the qualifying heat with a time of 11.27. Tom Myerholz and Kaio Zanette scored one point each with eight-place finishes in their respective events. Myerholz took eighth in the 300-meter hurdles intermediate with a time of 44.75, while Zanette finished the 400 in 53.30 seconds.

Other competitors at the meet for East Haven included Mike Castellano in the 100 (13th, 12.00), Kevin Medina in the 400 (15th, 57.02), Myerholz in the 110 hurdles (10th, 17.67), Ian Loehmann in the 110 hurdles (11th, 17.83) and 300 hurdles (15th, 48.00), Figueroa in the 300 hurdles (9th, 45.51), Damian in the 300 hurdles (12th, 46.95), Nathan Santos in the long jump (9th, 19-3) and pole vault (11th, 9-0), Josh Rao in the javelin (12th, 108-4), and Ryan Cordova in the javelin (14th, 103-10).

Baseball

East Haven dropped its final two games of the regular season and has a record of 9-11 heading into postseason play.

On May 14, East Haven lost to Branford by a 6-4 margin. Ryan Spano had two hits and finished with one RBI for the Yellowjackets.

East Haven then took a 9-3 defeat versus Hand on May 18. Luis Vega, Frank Camera, and Steve Mingione each drove in a run in the loss.

Girls’ Tennis

East Haven won one and lost one last week to put its record at 5-14 with one more match to go this season.

On May 14, East Haven lost to Lyman Hall by a 4-3 score. All three of East Haven’s victories came from the singles lineup as Jenna Pane won 6-3, 7-6 at No. 1 singles; Nhi Trinh won her match, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles; and Jade Roberts was victorious by a 5-7, 7-5, 10-6 score at No. 3 singles.

Following that match, East Haven played Wilcox Tech on May 17 and earned a 5-2 victory. The Easties swept doubles as Autumn Hernandez and Emma Luden won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles; Riya Patel and Kayla Vernon won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles; and Sophia Angueira and Carolyn Miller won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. In singles action, Jenna Pane won her match by an 8-5 final at No. 1 singles, and Jade Roberts earned a 8-6 win at No. 3 singles.

Boys’ Tennis

East Haven split its final two matches of the regular season and finished the year with a 7-13 record.

The Yellowjackets’ week started with a 7-0 defeat at North Haven on May 14, but they rebounded with a 6-1 victory over Career on May 18 to end the year on a good note.

Golf

The Yellowjackets played a pair of matches last week and finished with one loss and one tie to move their overall record to 5-11-1.

On May 14, East Haven took on Law at Orange Hills Country Club and was defeated by a score of 165-193. This score marked the Yellowjackets’ best round of the season. Logan Hamilton had the team’s best round as he finished with a 45. Mike Astorino shot a 46, while Mike Moscato and Andrew Zito both finished with a score of 51.

East Haven then took on Hillhouse at Alling Memorial Golf Club on May 17 and played the Academics to a 206-206 tie. The medalist of the match was East Haven’s Alexis Pendziwater, who shot a score of 45. Astorino ended his round with a 48, Mike Moscato shot a 50, and Jon Moscato finished with a 63.

Softball

The Yellowjackets were victorious in their lone game last week to improve to 11-8 with one more game remaining before postseason play.

On May 14, East Haven took on Lauralton Hall and came away with a 13-6 victory on the road. Taylor Myers recorded the victory on the hill for the Easties. At the plate, Jessica Stettinger and Mariah DeCarlo had two hits apiece for the Yellowjackets, who scored five runs in the first inning, four in the third, and four in the seventh.
